Book Description

October 24, 2011
A musician, documentarian, scholar, and one of the founding members of the influential folk revival group New Lost City Ramblers, Mike Seeger (1933-2009) spent more than fifty years collecting, performing, and commemorating the culture and folk music of white and black southerners, which he called "music from the true vine." In this fascinating biography, Bill Malone explores the life and musical contributions of folk artist Seeger, son of musicologists Charles and Ruth Crawford Seeger and brother of folksingers Pete and Peggy Seeger.

Malone argues that Seeger, while not as well known as his brother, may be more important to the history of American music through his work in identifying and giving voice to the people from whom the folk revival borrowed its songs. Seeger recorded and produced over forty albums, including the work of artists such as Libba Cotton, Tommy Jarrell, Dock Boggs, and Maybelle Carter. In 1958, with an ambition to recreate the southern string bands of the twenties, he formed the New Lost City Ramblers, helping to inspire the urban folk revival of the sixties. Music from the True Vine presents Seeger as a gatekeeper of American roots music and culture, showing why generations of musicians and fans of traditional music regard him as a mentor and an inspiration.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"[An] excellent and affectionate biography."
-Times Literary Supplement

"[An] illuminating biography . . . . paints Seeger's contribution to the folk music revival as one of genuine respect for and commemoration of the music he was preserving and lets the importance of Seeger's work speak for itself."
-Library Journal

"Malone traces Seeger's life and achievements with affection and in remarkable detail."
-Booklist

"In Bill C. Malone, Seeger has a biographer worthy of his importance."
-ForeWord

"Malone's Music from the True Vine recounts Mike Seeger's life and mission in rich detail . . . . It's a balanced, well-told story of a passion for this rural music and of its importance in our daily lives."
-News Leader

"Malone's work is an important tribute to a rare musician."
-The Daily Page

"Bill Malone, the dean of country music history, presents a fascinating life-and-times biography of master musician Mike Seeger, one of the folk revival's most influential and under-recognized figures. There is no better person to tell Seeger's story."--Ronald D. Cohen, Emeritus Professor of History, Indiana University Northwest, editor of Alan Lomax, Assistant in Charge: The Library of Congress Letters, 1935-1945

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!, October 27, 2011

This review is from: Music from the True Vine: Mike Seeger's Life and Musical Journey (Hardcover)
Bill Malone has beautifully captured the center of Mike's life- to collect, learn, share traditional southern music. Mike's obsession with the music is a major gain to all music lovers given that artists as diverse as Bob Dylan, Ry Cooder, The Grateful Dead and older half-brother Pete all learned plenty from Mike and are happy to acknowledge that. But more, Mike worked at making his archival recordings accessible with contributions to Folkways Records (Smithsonian Folkways), Rounder Records, The Library of Congress, University of North Carolina and more.

The book outlines Mike's personal life, but focuses more on his interest in music, musical development, and enormous contributions that have led to more than one major renaissance of traditional music played in both traditional and contemporary settings.

One thing Malone makes very clear-we owe Mike for his enormous contributions to the fabric of American Music. It's hard to read the book and not wonder how Mike managed to accomplish what he did-but inspiring!

Highly recommended.

Also recommend Mike's many recordings and videos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Coulda Been Longer, January 20, 2012

This review is from: Music from the True Vine: Mike Seeger's Life and Musical Journey (Hardcover)
Mike Seeger was my friend and client for about 30 years, so I can say for sure that Prof. Malone has got all the facts right as I know them, and added quite a bit to my knowledge of Mike's intensely interesting life. Mike was immersed in the musical traditions of the US. He played the music, discovered it, recorded it, toured it, and advocated for it. Anyone who is interested in American music would do well to read this book. And as a dividend they'll get a peak into the roiling political years of the 1950's and '60' and a glimpse of his talented family and the musicians he hung out with. Malone has created a work that is at once scholarly and readable. But there are a ton of great stories about Mike that didn't make it in. Maybe there is room for another book, maybe a novel?
