This a very comprehensive study that walks through the ancient Greeks through the Baroque era.
The companion book is the Anthology which comes with cd recordings of every example. The three work together to inform and enlighten. Especially enjoyed the chapter on troubadors and treveres, like Eleanor of Aquitain, who composed the only surviving trevere song. She was the only woman to be queen of both France and England. After the death of the King, she gives up all privilege to become a nun. This may be a textbook, but it's a great read.
