5.0 out of 5 stars More Than Gabby, May 4, 2007
This review is from: Music of Old Hawaii (Audio CD)
Though specifically advertised as a Gabby Pahinui recording, this album (originally released on vinyl in 1962) came from The Sons of Hawaii. Of course, the legendary Pahinui was there on slack-key guitar, but also in the studios of Hula Records were Eddie Kamae on uke, David Rogers on steel guitar and Joe Marshall on acoustic bass. From low-key songs to upbeat dance tunes, all done in an intoxicating trad Hawaiian style, this disc is essential listening for anyone who grew up on, misses, or has armchair-travelled to the Islands. Especially haunting is The Sons' take on the traditional song "He'eia," a tune which would indeed become a Gabby trademark.
