Very solid first CD,

I picked up a copy of the Music today and have listened to it like three times already. I only saw the Music the other day on the Late Show and liked their sound. The lead singer was dancing up a storm and the guitar was constant and full of energy. After listening to the CD a couple of times, I'm glad I went out and bought it after only catching a single spot by the band on Tv. The Music's lead singer Robert Harvy sounds very much like Perry Farrel of Jane's Addiction, both in the way he sounds and the style of his delivery. The entire CD has the same constant crashing guitars and energy that first got me hooked, with only a few moments to catch your breath on a few brooding slower tempo tracks. Overall this is an awesome albumn and I hope the band goes big places. I would love to see them perform live as they would totally get any crowd pumping and Harvy just seems to have such powerful stage presence.

The best album of 2003 (so far),

At last, something original made by musicians who aren't afraid to break the mould. Combine The Stone Roses with Led Zep, throw in some Prodigy and some Rage, and you're getting there. Turn this one up loud and listen to it rock, feel the techno beats mixed in with the "cranked up to 11" guitars, and let it wash through your soul. The minimalist sleeve gives nothing away, you just have to play it to understand it - if you like the video to "Take The Long Road....", you'll like everything on here. Since I bought this the day it was released (something I haven't down for a long time), I have been playing it non-stop, so that's some kind of recommendation by itself. Go get it!

One of the most original sounds around...Along with Bright Eyes, Howie Day, and Ben Kweller, The Music has the potential to become a revolutionary band....

Its been a long time since I was completely captivated by a new band, well now I'm captivated.I took a chance and ordered the new cd having only heard the "Take the Long road..." on the 23rd. On the 27th I saw them open up for Coldplay and the hype was an understatement. I had heard comparisons to the Stone Roses as well as Zeppelin, but this was beyond my hopes. Well on Saturday the long awaited CD arrived at my door, and I haven't stopped playing it. I've told countless people about the band, and all have trusted my opinion, bought it, and loved it. For me "Getaway" is the top song on the CD, but each time I play it through I find I like another song a bit more than the last time I heard it. To be honest, I'm struggling to sleep as I'm in a trance from "Getaway", and "Human" is having a similar effect. I need to get more Music...in fact I'm thinking about a trip to England to see them live. If you have any doubts about the Music, forget them - this band is real, awesome and the best thing I've heard in years.

Trippy, Unique, Rocking Album,

I got into The Music through their second album, Welcome To The North (which is incredible), and only then did I get this album. The tunes are not quite as catchy as on WTTN, but they are really awesome. The singer Rob has such an insane voice, and it is really needed at a time when every freakin singer out there tries to sound like Pearl Jam and STP, adding in R's to every word. Such annoying bands with singers like that I can think of are: Creed, The Calling, Nickelback, and really, nearly every band that comes out today tries to put on that fake accent. It's really annoying. Anyways, so in this day and age, to have a singer like Rob come out and belt high notes to the likes of the masterful Geddy Lee of Rush, nothing can compare.
The songwriting on this album is great. I wouldnt say it's completely progressive, but it's definitely got progressive elements. The guitar work is really special in that the guitarist plays a hybrid of rhythm and lead, much like Alex Lifeson of Rush. I saw The Music live and the guitarist just stands there like a pillar, but his guitar work makes up for it. Plus Rob dances around like crazy so he captures the limelight anyways. The drummer is really sick. He doesnt stick to the standard rock beats. He really tries out new things and bangs away. I don't know much about bass, but the bassist sounds darn good. Check out this album, and their second one Welcome To The North. They are both sick! And I'm looking forward to a third one coming out sometime this year!

I've felt like such an old man over the past several years, a curmudgeon completely disgusted with the state of music. When DMB is actually the best thing out there, I can't help but wonder: is rock and roll dead? Then along comes The Music. Yes, there's hope for the future. We can all draw up lists of who they sound like -- Led Zep, Chemical Brothers, Perry Farrell, Rush, etc. etc. -- all true, but all secondary to the fact that these guys sound terrific. And yes, their lyrics are essentially drivel -- so was "Love Me Do", but that didn't stop a nation from swooning (no, I'm not comparing The Music to The Beatles, because that's the kiss of death -- remember The Knack?). These guys have a purity about them -- they're not pretentious, but sound like they actually enjoy what they're doing. So what's my point? Give this disc a listen. It's infectious, as other reviewers have stated far more eloquently than me. It will make you want to dance around the room, even if you're in your mid-30s and work in a corporate cube farm. It will make you remember why you love rock and roll, and why you always will love it. It will make you feel young again, and if you're already young, then I'm jealous, because this could be the Next Big Thing, sort of how I felt when I first heard Nirvana as a college student back in the early 90s.

Suffice it to say I am old enough to have appreciated the 'birth' of Led Zeppelin and saw them in concert 100 years ago. I still LOVE big, loud, WELL DONE music like this, and as far as I'm concerned, bands like this are few and far between. I can't say enough about The Music. Although I'd never heard of them, I was fortunate to have seen them last week when they opened for Coldplay, and when I heard the first song...I got goosebumps. I was giddy....they are SO, SO good. Got their CD the next day, and I thought the windows of my car would blow out....not that I would have noticed. Or cared. Great, great guitars, awesome vocals....I'm 20 again!!!!

You know how sometimes records come along and you don't really get into it right away? And then years pass, you contemplate selling it to your local used store, but first you pop it back into your cd player and hear something you didn't catch all those years ago? I am thinking along the lines of the second Stone Roses record, which was brilliant, but was missed buy a majority of people looking for Fools Gold PT. 2. Well this record is very similar, influenced equally by late eighties/early ninties brit pop and Led Zepplin. These youngsters have created a beautiful, dancable, heavy guitar riff album that is equally fun and artistic. Easily the album of the year. Homage to John Squire and Jimmy page with nods to the Mondays, Smiths, and today. Original and perfect...I hope it doesn't suffer the same fate of so many brilliant British imports, and fall to the wayside of American radio pop conscienceness.

I've seen The Music a couple of times in recent months (opening up for The Vines and Coldplay, respectively). I liked what I saw, and bought the CD. This is not a bad album by any stretch of the imagination but it demonstrates again that sometimes it's difficult to catch a band's sound in the studio. There is much debate about the band's sound, and whether it owes any debt to Led Zep (no IMHO, but lead singer Robert Harvey does bring to mind a young Robert Plant). From the opening track "The Dance" the album is heavy and really doesn't let up. After a while, all the songs start sounding sort of the same, and as a result I find the album to be too long (56 min). Best songs include the single "Take the Long Road and Walk It", "Turn Out the Light" and "Disco". I hope that with future releases the band will open up their sound, and inject some variety. Live, however, the band sparkles with energy, and playing a tight 40 min. opening set goes by quickly. Very entertaining.

--A ROCK BAND...WITH A TOUCH OF ACID!!!
This CD is so full of energy and feeling. It's kinda of like hearing a more electronic, paced-up U2 with Led Zeppellin's Robert Plant...sort of. It's really quite unique... The drumming is so good, and are the spiraling guitar rifs mixed with the electronic effects... The Music will make you wanna dance...(noo not O-Zone style) but as somebody mentioned earlier, with the mixture of Rock and Electronica (trance). This is definietely a rock band, however, and they have a really cool style. I have no doubt that they're great on stage! Buy this CD if you're looking for something new. THESE GUYS ARE CRAZY...in a good way. Best Songs: "The Dance, Human, Too High" |
