Book Description

July 1, 2000

"The whole astonishing range of Brazilian music is revealed…"—Stage and Television Today.

The first paperback edition of this study of Brazilian music, hailed as the long awaited, comprehensive, and scholarly history of this complex subject when it appeared in hardback in 1994. Schreiner takes us from the merging of Amerindian, African and European cultures under the Portuguese colonists to the evolution of the many rhythms and dance forms associated with popular Brazilian music. The choro, the samba, the bossa nova are coolly and carefully unravelled and the book ends on the contemporary music scene of the 1990s.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This is an updated translation of a work issued previously in several German editions. The long history of Brazil's rich and diverse popular music is presented in depth, from precolonial roots right up to one of today's best known singers, Xuxa. Several other recents books on Brazil's popular music, such as John Krich's recent Why Is This Country Dancing? A One-Man Samba to the Beat of Brazil (S. & S. , 1993), concentrate more on the recent past. Krich's travelog style will appeal to a more general audience. Both authors bring a wealth of personal experience to their descriptions of musicians and musical styles. Libraries with strong collections on Brazil, and larger popular music history collections, will want the Schreiner work for the wider scope it provides.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Guide to pre-1970 Brazilian music, April 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Musica Brasileira (Hardcover)
This is a responsible and useful (if a bit dull) guide to Brazilian popular music of this century up to the early 1970s (when it was first published). It's very weak on the last twenty years, however. A good resource, but not as good as "The Brazilian Sound" (Temple University Press), which is much more comprehensive and also more fun to read.
