This review is from: De Musica Mensurata: The Anonymous of St. Emmeram (Music Scholarship and Performance) (Hardcover)
... for the study and performance of 13th Century 'measured' polyphony, including the works of the 'Notre Dame School' is the manuscript called the Anonymous of St. Emmeran. Without it, we would scarcely be able to make sense of and transcribe some of the most important music of European history. It's thoroughly a volume for experts in the field; I might say that if you don't already know of its importance, it will be of no interest to you, and if you DO know of it, you won't need me to review it.I'm posting this notice because I suspect that some people are unaware of this particular extraordinary publication, by the Indiana University Press, of a complete critical edition, including the original Latin text with English translation on facing pages, and a substantial introduction to the work by editor Jeremy Yudkin, done in 1990. I notice that it is available, and selling for a mere $65.00 as of today. Believe me, that's an acceptable price. |
