5.0 out of 5 stars The Dude Throws Down, November 22, 2001

This review is from: Musical Biography of Quincy Jones (Audio CD)
This is the title of the 4th in the 4 CD in the boxed set - a chronicle of music from 1953 onwards. His talent is intensely felt from track 1, CD 1......and doesn't let up! At 23 Q was recognised by Gillespie as talented .. and on this set you hear the best. I spent my Thanksgiving day cooking & listening and you can be sure of giving a life long wonderful gift - to yourself or anyone from 14 to 94. The only question you will have about this set is how did you miss this concentrated genius spreading his energy. Jazz, hip hop and musical scores and so much more- Heat of the Night to Austin Powers- Bossa Nova TV shows- Ironside; Frank Sinatra, Bono, Michael Jackson and Hampton. And you wonder why my husband and 5 sons said the dinner was the best? This set has a most reasonable price and well worth at least twice as much - Thank-you QJ.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great material, excellently remastered, December 21, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Musical Biography of Quincy Jones (Audio CD)
This collection runs the gamut of pop and jazz musical styles. When songs differed between the single and album version, the single version is used. For a Rhino box set, this title has excellent remastering. Instead of the usually over-bright presentation, Bernie Grundman is the remastering engineer here -- and he treats these tracks with a slight hand, allowing the original musicality of the master tapes shine through. You probably don't have these tracks sounding this good elsewhere in your collection (unless you own the Grundman remastered Michael Jackson albums).

Jones's musical biography is a history of American music. The variety and depth of the music compiled on these CDs is amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a wonderful collection of the best music, August 6, 2005
This review is from: Musical Biography of Quincy Jones (Audio CD)
I had no idea who Quincy Jones really was until I watched a PBS special the other night called American Masters. I am a big fan of his album "Big Band Bossa Nova" and I was amazed to see that he did a great deal of big-band styled music. This box set encompasses so many different aspects of his career. Big band music, movie & television scores, to producing some of pop music's greatest stars. I am extremely pleased with this purchase. There are so many great songs on these 4 discs they will be in heavy rotation on my MP3 player for quite some time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great collection, January 4, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Musical Biography of Quincy Jones (Audio CD)
The wide array of music in this collection is amazing - I've always enjoyed his later albums (The Dude, Back on The Block) but this collection opened up the depth of his earlier work to me. I had originally ordered this from Amazon, but cancelled it after I found it at a discount club (Costco)...

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Music By A Master, May 19, 2011

This review is from: Musical Biography of Quincy Jones (Audio CD)
This four CD collection was put together by Quincy Jones from his life's work. Quincy was born in the USA in 1933. He has performed as a trumpet player and has excelled as a music writer, arranger, conductor, soundtrack designer and much more. He has earned 27 Grammy Awards. And he is still around. There are a total of 74 pieces of music. You may not like all of them, but with the wide choice spanning 1950s to 1990s, you are sure to enjoy most of the work and to fall in love with some of the pieces. The people for whom he arranged music, conducted and recording makes for a daunting list. To name just a few - Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Lesley Gore, Ray Charles, Michael Jackson and the list goes on . . . and on. The 100 page booklet that accompanies the collection is like an archive of photos and thoughts from Quincy Jones and from others who know him and his work. From its opening paragraph by Bono to the closing poetry by Maya Angelou facing a brilliant photo collage, this booklet is the finest record album accompaniment for the library of any audiophile. What a joy if you have a multi disc CD changer and you can pre-program your own playlist according to your mood. For students of Jazz, the blues and the evolution of certain music styles over fifty plus years, this is a valuable resource. It is a huge value as well if you can get a mint condition used boxed set - which from what I can tell - are usually shorn of UPC code as remainders.
