5.0 out of 5 stars An intimate musical dialogue.... October 26, 2005
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
There is something about the violin-cello duo that transcends any other instrumental combination that I have ever heard. Listening to this music is like absorbing the warmth of an open fire in the middle of winter. All the music on this CD is played with feeling and conviction. This music has healing powers. If you feel tense and fed up with the stress of your everyday life, put this CD on and you will feel like everything is OK in the universe. I own TONS of CDs - classical, rock, jazz, you name it. This CD and the 2 other companion CD's in the "Captain" series have got to be the most musically rewarding CD's in my entire collection. I never get tired of listening to the CD's in this series. Buy these CD's if you love intimate chamber music. If you don't know if you like this kind of music buy them anyway. You will be instantly hooked on the sound and feeling they leave you with. They will heal you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish there was more! August 5, 2006
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Purchased this CD a while ago. A week doesn't go by without listening to it. Well recorded and the prescense of Yosif Feigelson's Cello is just wonderful. It is unfortunate that there hasn't been a follow up featuring Feigelson on the Cello. What a remarkable musician. This is such a delight to listen to.

Hopefully someday there will be more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chello and violin March 2, 2006
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The best of the three. Just chello and violin which brought to life the sessions with Maturin and Jack at sea.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Triumph!!! March 12, 2006
Format:Audio CD
I have always thought the Music with the Captain series has been over orchestrated, and that the music should be boiled down to it's purest form, the violin, the cello.

Now it appears they are closer to my ideal. As good as the first two are this ,the third, goes a long way towards approximating the sound of the cabin of Aubrey as he and Maturin 'scrape, scrape away'. Maybe on the fourth they will revisit the Locatelli and play it on salt air worn, tired, strings. Ok maybe that would be too pure.

Add this one, it is a gem.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Most Apt Album for the High Seas November 1, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Of all the similar albums in honor of Patrick O'Brian's masterwork novels, this is the only one that is appropriate to the characters Doctor Maturin and Captain Aubrey, Royal Navy. Cello and violin pieces were not only a fundamental chamber duet but a Scottish folk duet as well, as continued today with Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas. These particular pieces were not mentioned in the novels, but I concur with the package notes that the scores could have been among those brought aboard H.M.S. Surprise and other vessels. Aubrey was actually a better musician than the doctor and kept at home a Guaneri, with shipboard instruments expendable and often mistuned from adverse weather. The musicians here, however, Mela Tenebaum violin and Yosif Feigelson cello, did not have to deal with high seas and produced fine, crisp recordings of duets by Fiala, Nardini, Firillo, Bréval, Platti, and more familiar Vivaldi and Stamitz. Thus, listen to this album while bringing forth the after dinner port and imagine yourself at the Captain's table. Happy sailing and avoid the Doldrums!

4.0 out of 5 stars Sublime July 23, 2008
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Thoroughly enjoyable selection of chamber music, and as one reviewer previously noted, a perfect accompaniment to a quiet evening. Fine music that doesn't have to demand your full attention (although worth doing so). Seems to encourage that under-appreciated gift that's shared during an evening with friends: lively, thoughtful conversation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wish I was there. April 19, 2006
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I can just see them playing in their quarters. I've always wanted to sail on a tall ship, having this Captain and crew and this music would be idealic. The music really does put in that frame of mind. Good companion the Master and Commander soundtrack.

It's not my favorite, but it's up there.

I ordered this CD after watching movie. It's good music to eat to as its similar recordings are all baroque quartets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable music.
I enjoyed the Captain's Cabin music from the Master and Commander soundtrack. This is more of that fun rollicking music, sans movie score.

I play this at special dinners and at special times. It is wonderful to hear music that I don't usually listen to.
