Book Description

October 1997 6 and upAlphabasics
Lavishly illustrated with artwork and amazing photographs, Alphabasics are a combination of ABC books and picture dictionaries. Each book names an object for each letter and gives fascinating information on topics that are fresh and appealing to children.
-- an entire page explores one subject and its related topics
-- lavish illustrations and photographs help provide further information
-- entertaining and informative facts

As an easy-to-read introduction to music, this ABC book uses an unusual question and answer format to showcase a broad assortment of instruments explaining their history and how they are played. Beautiful artwork and photographs feature people playing such familiar instruments as drums, piano and horns as well as more unconventional instruments as the yam stick from Australia, the zeze, and the quena from South America. Activities show children how to make their own:
-- banjo
-- panpipes
-- maracas, and more!

Review

AlphaBasiCs is just what it appears to be. . . a series of alphabet books based on those subjects which interest young children. Such books encourage kids to let their imaginations soar. . . and to design their own alphabet books -- Brandon Sun, Dec. 28, 1997

One of the best books for children on musical instruments I've seen -- K. Dalby, Roberts Park School, Norfolk, Virginia

Taken from Chapter 4: Drum D is for something you hit with your hands or sticks. It helps keep the beat of music. Native People say it sounds like the heartbeat of Mother Earth. In the past, people sent long-distance messages by playing it loud. Did you guess that D is for drum?

5.0 out of 5 stars Eclectic Mix is Informing and Entertaining, June 29, 2000
Musical Instruments From A to Z is a wonderfully eclectic alphabet book. The choice of instruments runs the gamut from the ordinary; guitar, clarinet, drum, to the unique and unusual; ch'ing, alpenhorn, and zeze. The choice of instruments for each letter is sometimes just what you would think; D is for drum, S is for stringed instruments, and sometimes it just keeps you guessing; A is for harp, or "Angel music", E and F are for guitar, "electric" of course that you play with your "fingers". In keeping with this varied format the illustrations are a wonderful combination of photographs of adults and children, illustrations, and paintings, sure to keep any child amused and entertained.
