Editorial Reviews

Current research indicates that early exposure to classical music stimulates a baby's mind and aids in the development of creativity, motor coordination, and emotion. Much like the Baby Einstein series, this 26-minute tape combines lively classical music with brightly colored, boldly patterned animated animals for a virtual feast for the eyes and ears. Each of 10 distinct instruments is associated with a particular animal: A cat bobs along in a boat to the accompaniment of a flute playing the familiar Bach "Polonaise and Badinerie," and a giraffe plays hide-and-seek behind tall buildings while a bassoon plays Mozart's "Bassoon Sonata." Other familiar tunes include the Clarke's "Trumpet Voluntary," Bach's "Prelude in C minor," and Haydn's "Oboe Concerto." The video is divided into five sections, each of which features two animal-instrument combinations complete with explanatory titles. This format facilitates viewing in short time increments--a practice especially recommended for the youngest infants. Older, more verbal toddlers will delight in guessing what animal or familiar object will appear next, and often create elaborate stories to accompany the images on the screen. This is a visually and aurally stimulating introduction to classical music that both parents and children will enjoy. --Tami Horiuchi

5.0 out of 5 stars A sweet video with beautiful music., May 14, 2005
This review is from: Musical Instruments VHS (VHS Tape)
This has really cute animals that look like they were cut out of colored paper and pasted together. Each instrument heard corresponds to a different animal:

violin = birds
clarinet = butterfly
guitar = elephant
trumpet = camel
piano = monkey
bassoon = girraffe
harpsicord = turtle
flute = cats
oboe = fish

The music is lovely and the entire video is such a refreshing change from the fast pace of videos like Brainy Baby and Baby Einstein. It's great! I have reveiwed all the other So Smart videos as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved it... and so did my baby, January 6, 2003

This is a great video, sometimes what parents and kids like does not agree. When I watched it the fist time I thought it was so moving and beautiful, and was not sure my 16 moth old would enjoy the soft pace and music, but he was inmediatly hooked on it. The simple and colourful patterns, and the fact that each segment features a specific instrument, makes you focus more on the music and feeling behind it (this is a difference with the Baby Einstein video's, wich are also very good). I also think that the fact that there are no words, only music, constitutes a plus, specially for those of us whose native language is not english. I definitly recomend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly interactive for itty bitty ones, September 11, 2001
Here's a great video for itty bitty ones (0-3). It's beautifully produced, blending images with engaging music and offers a wonderful exposure to music and instruments. Each animal is assigned a musical instrument. It's easily viewed in segments, which is a good way to view it with this age. Our babies were delighted with this, they laughed, cooed and clapped their hands, smiled and touched the screen. Kids liked guessing which animal was coming next, calling out the shapes and dancing and playing along.
