Book Description

10 and up5 and upMusical Journey in the Footsteps of Lewis & Clark
Music and Lewis and Clark are not words that generally go in the same sentence. But the journals of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark show that music was an integral part of their famous journey. Music brought welcome entertainment to the men, far from home. It also served as a diplomatic bridge to the American Indians they met on their way. Although Lewis and Clark themselves did not play, they had two fiddlers Pierre Cruzatte and George Gibson among the 30 or so men who went with them. Other members of the expedition sang and danced. The journals do not mention specific tunes the men played, but we can say with certainty that the music here dates from the period. We have rigorously documented all but the Native American pieces, which were handed down through oral tradition.
In compiling this musical journey, we have selected songs and tunes to mark each major step of the way, from President Thomas Jefferson s idea for the journey to its conclusion. We hope this soundtrack of the expedition will enable you to experience the story of Lewis and Clark in a new way. Enjoy the journey . . .

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5 Up—These 30 songs, created by Anne and Ridley Enslow, use accounts of the Lewis and Clark expedition which often mention music, as its inspiration. The pieces reflect the different stages of the journey, and they are arranged in chronological order so that the first songs are the complex arrangements that Lewis and Clark would have heard before they set out, and then the pieces change to the tunes of the French boatmen, the songs of the Native Americans who they encountered (sung in French and Native languages), and the simple songs that the explorers might have sung at their campsites. There are instrumental and vocal selections as well as readings set to music. Some tunes, such as "Greensleeves," might be familiar to listeners, but most will be new. All are performed on period instruments as well as "informal" music makers such as spoons and hambones. This recording will help students understand the importance of music in the Lewis and Clark expedition. It is more related to specific expedition events than Lewis and Clark: Sounds of Discovery (Makoche Recording Co., 1998). A good choice for school use.—Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO

From Booklist

This program traces Lewis and Clark’s epic journey via music of the period. Principal performers Anne and Ridley Enslow carefully researched the music and instruments of the era. The CD includes 30 songs and occasional readings from the explorers’ letters and journals. The song order follows the expedition, with more elaborate selections at the beginning and end of the journey. As the explorers travel into remote wilderness areas, the music is pared down. The CD incorporates a variety of instruments, both familiar (hammer dulcimer, cello, and flute) and unusual (tabor, bodhran, and goat-hoof rattles), and the vocals are light, melodic, and pleasing. The well-written 128-page accompanying paperback contains vintage and modern photographs, artwork, and maps. Short chapters are devoted to each song and include background information, lyrics, and more. Like the Enslows’ Music of the American Colonies (2000), this is a great resource for social studies and music classrooms. Grades 5-10. --Laurie Hartshorn --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for use with children 10 and older, October 11, 2008
The Lewis & Clark Expedition of 1804-1806 was one of the major exploratory ventures of American history and helped to shape the destiny of our nation. Now a unique approach to classroom curriculums for teaching children about this seminal incident in America's exploration of the West has been created by Anne and Ridley Enlsow with "A Musical Journey In The Footsteps Of Lewis & Clark". This impressively produced and performed compilation of 30 songs and tunes is presented in an elegant jewel case is ideal for inclusion as a curriculum supplement for American History/Social Studies programs and includes lyrics, chapter notes, Internet addresses, a suggestion list of further listing, and an index. Of special note is the provision of sources for each of the songs and how they relate to U.S. history. The combination of CD and a 128-page book illustrated with both color as well as black-and-white photos and pictures makes "A Musical Journey In The Footsteps Of Lewis & Clark" ideal for use with children 10 and older, and in grades 5 through 10.
