A musical miracle indeed!, February 28, 2005
Svend Asmussen, the fiddler from Scandanavia, was a beautiful, swinging player. This CD compiles some of his first recordings, made in Copenhagen from 1935-40. Almost all the tunes get a medium-up to up-tempo treatment, and nothing drags. The playing is wonderful and swings like mad. If you like small-group jazz from the Swing era, you will love this CD. (There is also a Volume 2, 1941-50, that is just as good.)
