A Treasure Trove,
By
This review is from: The Musical Tradition of the Eastern European Synagogue, Volume 1: History and Definition (Judaic Traditions in Literature, Music, and Art)(Part 1 & 2) (v. 1) (Hardcover)
This work is an obvious labor of love. Written by a man of vast knowledge and understanding of the subject it is, at once, solidly grounded in scholarship, as well as eminently readable. The author's judgments are sound, and he does not hesitate to set forth incisive, insightful opinions or sagacious conclusions. It is also a work which is long overdue. The whole project, which promises future volumes and compact disks, is eagerly anticipated. Many thanks to Syracuse University for sponsoring the project. May Sholom Kalib go from strength to strength, and may his words bring about a renewal of the glorious heritage of the true Ashkenazic liturgical music of the synagogue.

This review is from: The Musical Tradition of the Eastern European Synagogue, Volume 1: History and Definition (Judaic Traditions in Literature, Music, and Art)(Part 1 & 2) (v. 1) (Hardcover)
This collection is highly technical, and heavily based on Idehson's work, but is a fascinating and useful resource if you're looking to understand the underlying musical dynamics within the Eastern European synagogue music.
