5.0 out of 5 stars organic unity in music, March 18, 2005

This review is from: Man the Musician (Bollingen Series (General)) (Paperback)
I think that most lovers of classical music have noticed and wondered at the way all the parts of the most complex classical compositions seem to fit together in a simple and satisfying pattern. Victor Zuckerkandl, using the ideas of musicologist Heinrich Schenker, goes a long way toward explaining this wonderful unity in diversity. What's more he does this so clearly that even a reader like me, with no musical training can understand. As a bonus, the reader gets introduced to the rich intellectual kingdom of Schenkerian analysis.
