Beautifully Performed and Recorded,

This review is from: Musique and Sweet Poetrie [Hybrid SACD] (Audio CD)
This SACD is one of the most beautifully performed and recorded SACD I have purchased. Jacob Lindberg performs on a ravishing 10-course Sixtus Rauwolf lute c. 1590 with its original soundboard intact. Jakob Lindberg and Emma Kirkby have selected some of the most beautiful and moving lute songs available, interspersed with lute solos. Jakob has even included 3 gorgeous lute solos by Michelangelo Galilei the youngest brother of Galileo Galilei, the great astronomer. The BIS engineers have captured it exquisitely with just the right amount of reverberation from the recording venue, the Lanna Church in Sweden. Emma Kirkby still sounds ravishing. Jakob includes one of the most interesting lute compositions I've ever heard, Robert Ballard's "Entree de luth", which sounds almost like one of Erik Satie's Gymnopédies! For anyone how even likes the lute or lute songs remotely this SACD is a must have. This review is of the multi-channel SACD layer of this Hybrid SACD.

I heard these two in concert last year and was looking for a recording that would recreate the purity and nuance of that performance. This is it. These two are as good as it gets in this repertoire. A varied song recital interspersed with solo lute pieces, in a crystal-clear recording with moderate ambiance. Even without SACD, this is a beautiful recording.
