Book Description

0786410434 978-0786410439 May 13, 2009
This era saw the spread of Islam during the age of Napoleon and the first important conflict between a Muslim people and the new nation called the United States of America. The volume looks at the interaction between the fading Muslim empires and the warring European powers, focusing on such dominant personalities as Muhammad 'Ali of Egypt and Uthman dan Fodio of Nigeria. The influence of Muslim slaves on the slave insurrections in Brazil is also addressed.

In addition to telling the story of the Muslim diaspora, the volume also juxtaposes detailed histories of Jews, Christians and people of African descent, along with a comprehensive history of the world so that the developments in the Muslim world can be placed within the context of what was happening elsewhere in the world and what was happening elsewhere to those whose religious roots are shared by the practitioners of Islam. The book is fully indexed, with a bibliography and several appendices.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

There are few, if any, chronologies of the Islamic world that cover a time span as broad as this one. Attorney and author Jenkins (Pan-African Chronology: A Comprehensive Reference to the Black Quest for Freedom in Africa, the Americas, Europe and Asia) organizes his chronology by year, arranging each of the major events in the Muslim world geographically and by their relationship to additional historical events. Many of the entries on people and events are long enough to be articles. There are also appendixes on the five pillars of Islam, Arab names, the Islamic calendar, and various leaders and dynasties. Useful as this work may appear, the works cited in the bibliography are of varying quality and no key is given in the chronology as to the source of the entries. There is no reference to either The Encyclopaedia of Islam (Brill Academic) or the Encyclopaedia Iranica (Bibliotheca Persica,), two of the most authoritative reference resources on Islam and the Muslim world, as sources for the work. Several entries are puzzling, such as the inclusion of items regarding Ludovico Sforza ("il Moro"). While Sforza was dark complexionedDhence his nicknameDany relation to the Islamic diaspora is probably farfetched. This is still a potentially useful initial resource for general chronology. Recommended for college and public libraries provided they also have additional reference resources on the Muslim world.DWilliam P. Collins, Library of Congress

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly condensed "dateline" reference work, October 18, 2002

(REAL NAME)
Useful reference for spread of Islam and Islamic history with a very specific character as a "dateline" reference of dynasties and history year by year and by various regions of islamic world. Some specialists would criticize particular points but it remains a useful resource both to get condensed view of a period and area of the Muslim world and as a way of reviewing details after reading broader and more interpretive works. Many readers will want to have some version of the Encylopedia of Islam available to get further information on specific terms and issues.
