Muslim Islam Veil, July 11, 2007
This review is from: Why do Muslim women wear the face covering the veil?
"Why do Muslim Women Wear the Face Covering, the Veil?" by "As Sayyid Isa al Haadi al Mahdi", The Original Tents of Kendar (publisher?), Brooklyn, NY, paperback, English with Arabic, orig. pub. 1971, revised: 1974, 1976, 1979, 1984, & 1989 (sixth revised ed.), 264 pgs; edition #38 (in a series of Islam-topic books, not 38 revisions). Chapter topics: Why the Veil in Biblical Times?, Misconception of Al Quraan, Distortion of the Veil in the West, Distortion of the Veil in the East, The Media vs the Veil, Idstortion of Islaamic Attire, Customs vs al Islaam, Description of Islaamic Attire Advers to the Sunnah of the Prophets, What is the Proper Way to Dress, Life Behind the Veil, Marriage, Ten Virtues of a Muslim Woman, & Harem Life. Explains why Muslim women, and why non-Muslim women, should wear a veil; actually, why all women should wear an abyya that reveals only the eyes of a woman. Many citations (in both Arabic and English) from both the Quran and ahadith noting why women should wear the veil and chador. It also details the custom of Jewish women in wearing burqa-like veils ("masaha" or "tsaiyph"), and quotes Torah texts for such justification. It details the types of rings and bracelets that men and women can wear. It notes the Arabic and English names for various types of clothing and headdress (hats/turbans) worn by Muslim men: gista, burd, jubbah, qura, faz, quftaan, surwaal, tarbuwsh, thawb, janiyyat, araaqiyya, kuwfiyy imaama, faas maghribiy, and the Persian Gulf chic: qutra wa shaal qasiyr. It has many drawings and photographs of the different types of "local custom" dresses or clothing worn by Arab women throughout the Middle East, Africa and the Orient. It condemns ANY woman who does not wear a veil. Essentially, a woman without a veil is a harlot; a woman's face cannot be exposed: you can see only her two eyes. Both mens' and womens' clothing must be white, not colored. The author quotes the Bible to show what type of clothing that Christians and Jews should wear. Despite its championing the very modest covering of women, it has very graphic "before and after" drawings of the vagina for showing women how they should shave the pubic hair around the vagina (p.208); and argues the hairs should be cropped to a quarter-inch in length! When a girl reaches puberty, the dance steps are shown as to how she is to apply the Hafla dress, and how to play the finger symbals (as Sanajiyn) during her belly dance. In my 5 years of reading books pertaining to Islam, this is the best "fundamentalist" book that I have seen that justifies why Muslim women must wear the all-concealing chador and veil.
