Book Description

Fascism has traditionally been characterized as irrational and anti-intellectual, finding expression exclusively as a cluster of myths, emotions, instincts, and hatreds. This intellectual history of Italian Fascism--the product of four decades of work by one of the leading experts on the subject in the English-speaking world--provides an alternative account. A. James Gregor argues that Italian Fascism may have been a flawed system of belief, but it was neither more nor less irrational than other revolutionary ideologies of the twentieth century. Gregor makes this case by presenting for the first time a chronological account of the major intellectual figures of Italian Fascism, tracing how the movement's ideas evolved in response to social and political developments inside and outside of Italy.

Gregor follows Fascist thought from its beginnings in socialist ideology about the time of the First World War--when Mussolini himself was a leader of revolutionary socialism--through its evolution into a separate body of thought and to its destruction in the Second World War. Along the way, Gregor offers extended accounts of some of Italian Fascism's major thinkers, including Sergio Panunzio and Ugo Spirito, Alfredo Rocco (Mussolini's Minister of Justice), and Julius Evola, a bizarre and sinister figure who has inspired much contemporary "neofascism."

Gregor's account reveals the flaws and tensions that dogged Fascist thought from the beginning, but shows that if we want to come to grips with one of the most important political movements of the twentieth century, we nevertheless need to understand that Fascism had serious intellectual as well as visceral roots.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The book succeeds admirably in convincing the reader that . . . fascism's foundations are very sophisticated intellectual constructs. (Paul Petzschmann Political Theory )

Review

Professor Gregor is one of the rare specialists in Italian fascism to have made a truly original contribution to the study of the subject. His books always provide food for thought and are challenging, intelligent, clear and well written. (Zeev Sternhell, Hebrew University, Jerusalem )

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best analysis's of Italian Fascism to date, January 15, 2006
This review is from: Mussolini's Intellectuals: Fascist Social and Political Thought (Hardcover)
A. James Gregor has written one of the definitive work on the nature and Ideology of Fascism by taking a common sense approach all to rare in academia. He goes directly to Fascist theorists on economics, sociology and philosophy, and forms a coherent image of a coherent doctrine. He shows the evolution of these concepts from the early nationalist economics of Friedrich List, to the Corporativism of Ugo Spirito. He also gives detail to the Actualism of Giovanni Gentile "The Philosopher of Fascism" though not as much as his other works. As a long time student of the History of Fascist Italy, the book was still an eye opener. To those new to it, it should be the conerstone of your learning.

Too often the word "Fascist" is thrown around, I hear it commonly applied to Neo-conservatives, Liberals, Islamic Fundamentalists, Bigots and Right wingers of every stripe. Be warned: You'll think twice about spouting such rubbish after reading this book, when you understand what Fascism actually is, you may loose your favorite political slur.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Buy For Those on The Right And the Left!, February 5, 2009

Gregor does an amazing job of digging through the almost forgotten annals of Fascist history and coming up with a well-reasoned, well-explained history of the evolution of Fascism in Italy. It takes courage these days to be objective in a world where the word "fascist" is an insult thrown into political discussions by people who do not even know what it means. This book explains it all and provides proof that rather than a bunch of emotional, blood thirsty industrialists and their zombie followers, as portrayed in almost every other book on the subject, the Italian Fascists were a highly intellectual group of people with very solid reasons for their chosen government. Eye-opening. Highly recommended for anyone interested in 20th century politics and especially, I think, for those on the Left who want to understand Fascism beyond the rhetoric.

4.0 out of 5 stars Understanding fascist intellectual thought, April 12, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is an excellent introduction to the individuals, philosophies, and events which influenced the formation of Italian Fascism. It provides an understanding of the historical, national (Italian), and international events which immediately preceded the fascist party and lent themselves to its creation. This book will provide the reader with a greater historical awareness than is commonly offered.
