This review is from: Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition; Night on Bald Mountain; Borodin: In the Steppes of Central Asia (Audio CD)
I had this recording on LP, back in the end of the seventies. I was surprised when I saw it on CD, so I decided to buy it. The CD have the same bright and crisp sound from the original recording, despite of the hiss from the background, and the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra still sounds as great it is. Compared with other versions this one have probably the most spectacular finale on the Great Gate at Kiev, with powerfull bass drum, bells and gong sounds, much better than Mehta and Solti's versions. For a reason I dont't understand this recording have been underrated for all this years, but believe me...you will not be dissapointed with this recording, no matter what other version you have. By the way, Night on Bald Mountain is terrific too.
