4.0 out of 5 stars Mustang Man
Louis L'Amour at his best my parents have the entire Sackett seriees. My dad is 80 years old and was never taught to read so we take turns reading him the Sackett series each winter. He knows the characters by name and can tell you from his own experience about the country they move through. He loves the realism and description of each book.

Louis L'Amour is one of my favorite authors, and Mustang Man met my expectations. It all started with Nolan Sackett running for his life when he came across two stranded travlers. One was a beautiful lady named Sylvie who was no sooner rescued by Nolan than she tried to kill him. It turns out that she was meaner than most of the hard western cowboys that he was use to dealing with. Nolan soons meets another pretty girl named Penelope who has a sad story and needs his help. Little did he realize that helping Penelope would put him right back in conflict with Sylvie and her gang of outlaws. In typical Louis L'Amour fashion, he manages to bring the old west to vivid life with a tale of a good strong cowboy, two pretty girls, a lost treasure of gold, and more bad men than you can shake a stick at.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great Western by the king of Western authors, August 24, 2011
Nolan Sackett is riding ahead of a posse when he chances across a woman stranded alone in the middle of nowhere. Nolan hasn't lived this long by taking things at face value, and sure enough this woman is pure poison. Years ago, the Indians wiped out an convoy carrying contraband Mexican gold, and it appears that after all these years someone has finally figured out just where all that gold is. The key to the gold is Penelope Hume, and Nolan has taken a shine to her, and has decided to help her out. But, can Nolan keep her alive long enough to get the gold and get away with the loot? There's a lot of bad men after that gold, and Nolan's going to have to work hard if he is going to even keep himself alive!

This is another great Western by the king of Western authors - Louis L'Amour, and a part of his epic series of novels on the members of the Sackett family. This is a very good, two-fisted story with bad guys both honorable and dishonorable, and the hero of the story - an honorable and reliable man, tough and independent and determined to see a job through once he's taken it on. I really enjoyed this novel, and highly recommend it!

In typical Louis L'Amour fashion, he manages to bring the old west to vivid life with a tale of a good strong cowboy, two pretty girls, a lost treasure of gold, and more bad men than you can shake a stick at. I have always enjoyed reading a good book about the old West, and Louis L'Amour makes each novel seems so real. Mustang Man was exciting and held my interest through out. The author paints real life pictures of the countryside as it would have appeared to someone actually traveling in the old West. His discriptions of mesas, mountains, valleys, dry river beds, flash floods, rock formations, are so realistic that one can almost feel the heat and dust. He brings characters to life in the same manner. The reader comes to know the lonely, honest, hardbitten cowboy that is usually his main character. Nolan Sackett is a prime example of one of Louis L'Amour's characters brought to life. Nolan Sackett is no angel, has killed men when pressed to do so, and has never owned more than a horse, his saddle, and his guns. But we can identify with him as a good and honest man living out his dreams in a harsh land. The author also gives the reader a good plot with lots of suspense. There are many surprise twists in the story of Mustang Man. The reader is never sure who all of the good guys and all of the bad guys are through out the book until the very end. I enjoyed Mustang Man because it kept me interested in the story and action through out the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Western Adventure Novel, December 6, 2001
I'll admit that I have a certain bias towards this book. My parents named me after its central character. This is a really entertaining novel that I would definitely reccommend to any fan of the Western genre. It's the story of a man named Nolan Sackett who, while just trying to escape a posse (he shot a man, but it wasn't his fault, of course), becomes involved in a complicated struggle over a heck of a lot of gold. It may not be one of the "great books of the 20th century," but anyone who expects it to be ought to have his head examined. If you're just looking for some light reading with good characters and an interesting story, then this book is well worth picking up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tough, gritty novel about adventurers and desperadoes!, July 26, 2011
By
I've only read one or two Louis L'Amour novels. This one attempts to merge a "survival code for outlaws" with a gritty portrayal of life in the wild West.

Nolan Sackett is just drifting, and trouble seems to follow him around. Then he gets mixed up in a search for hidden gold, and it seems like all compasses, from all people, are pointing to this gold. Many bodies will be left behind for the buzzards.

This is a short tale, easy to read, and full of adventure.

This review is from: Mustang Man (Leather Bound)
I'm a big fan of the late great author Louis L'Amour. This is the 8th western of his I've read almost all 5 stars. Haunted Mesa his only sci fi 5 stars, Walking Drum 5 stars, Last of the Breed 5 stars... see my reviews.

Mustang man is another great action packed small western novel...133 pages. Its a page burner with no boring parts. I read it in 8 hours. Again L'Amour was great with character build up and scenery description. Our main hero character is Nolan Sackett, a very strong 215lb rock hard man with a broken nose, good with a gun and rifle of the Sackett clan. Even though Nolan was a wanted outlaw, fast with a gun and rifle, Noland has strong morals and is a good man. L'Amour wrote several books about the Sacketts from the mountains of Tenn.

There is lots of gun and knife fighting, fighting and escaping from Indians and finding 300 lbs. of lost gold. We see various relatives ( some deadly evil) of the man who hid the gold ingots and escaped from Indians from "haunted" Rabbit Ears mountain in northern NM and others after the gold. Our hero Nolan befriends a pretty 18 year old good women "Penelope" to find the gold. Lots of twists and turns and double crossing. Noland Sackett has help from an old man, fights a poisoning, evil murderous woman and brothers, gunman, Indians, a breed and more. Lots of riding beautiful strong Mustang horses.

I really liked this book because we have a small cattle ranch within sight of Rabbit Ears mountain. Much of the scenery of the high plains desert description that L'Amour described is within our sight from the ranch. A lot of what he described is true and factual.

L'Amour says the area around Rabbit Ears was haunted and Indians did not want to go into the box canyon and in the novel there is an explosion from a gas/oil detonation. People seeking the hidden gold in the box canyon where getting sick from the gas.

Well, the real area around Rabbit Ears mountain has little or no oil, and very sparse natural gas deposits. However near Clayton NM., near Rabbit Ears is one of the worlds largest CO2 underground dome deposits where drilling does take place. Also there is an Indian legend that in No Mans land where our cattle ranch is, of an evil something that came down from the sky and walked among the ancient humans in the area. Also Indian chief Rabbit Ears is buried on Rabbit Ears Mountain.

Because of the harsh weather of 106F plus degrees in the summer and -17F below at times in the winter with only 15 inches of total precipitation per year and the evil space being of the far past, the Indians wanted nothing to do with No Mans land starting right near the NM border/OK panhandle within sight of Rabbit Ears mountain and Clayton NM. Almost all the white man had no use for the land except hiding outlaws. Today there is cattle ranching and agriculture due to large water pumping with big diesel engines from the underground aquifer. Plus windmills for water for cattle.

Readers will enjoy this fast paced western. 5 stars and recommended. Anyone interested in the true wild west will enjoy the true scenery description of Mustang Man plus the superb plot and story.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Sackett Story, April 12, 2009
By
C. Travis (Tennessee, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
L'Amour always tells a good story and this book is no exception. The story is about Noland Sackett, the outlaw Sackett, who at the beginning of the book is running for his life, but of course gets sidetracked because of a soft place in his heart for women in distress. But since no good deed goes unpunished, right off one of the women he befriends tries to kill him. The action is fast and furious, with hidden gold, beautiful women, and a whole collection of thieves, gunslingers, Indians, and cutthroats who are also after the hidden treasure (which just happens to be in a canyon where, according to Indian legend, nothing can live, not even birds.) Besides trying to find the hidden canyon, which he is not sure he wants to find, he has to stay alive while at least 10 times in the book someone tries to kill him. But Sackett is a hard man to kill. As with all good stories, in the end he comes out with the gold and the woman. This is a good read if you like westerns.
