Book Description

January 1, 1999 Frontline Colour (Book 1)
When the Korean War erupted in late June 1950, the USAF's standard fighter in the Far East was the F-80 Shooting Star. Although the F-80 mastered the North Korean Air Force, its lack of endurance resulted in the USAF rushing 145 obsolescent F-51 (nee P-51) Mustangs to Korea to serve principally in ground attack and reconnaissance roles for the USAF, the South African Air Force, the Royal Australian Air Force, and the embryonic Republic of Korea Air Force. By the time the war ended in 1953, some 194 Mustangs had been lost, most to anti-aircraft fire. These F-5 is were some of the most colorful Mustangs to ever see action, and the author has used his extensive contact base to accumulate the largest private collection of Korean War period color material in the world. Accompanying the photos are detailed captions, quotes from pilots, full appendices listing the units and F-51s that served in Korea, plus specifications, cutaways of the aircraft, and cockpit diagrams.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book book on F-51 Mustangs, January 12, 2001
This review is from: F-51 Mustang Units over Korea (Osprey Frontline Colour 1) (Paperback)
Warren Thompson has given the air enthusiasts, historians, and Mustang buffs an excellent start in Osprey's "Frontline Color" series. F-51 Mustang Units over Korea contains a great deal of information and carefully selected color photos of all US and UN users of F-51/RF-51s during the Korean War. This book covers a much overlooked area of aviation history dealing with F-51 operations and units in Korea. The facts about Australian, South Korean, and South African units were an extra bonus. This book gives these outstanding pilots, ground crews, and units their due.

Perfect for US Air Force, Royal Australian Air Force, South African Air Force and South Korean Mustang enthusiasts. It is a great book and I recommend it highly. If you want an operational overview of the F-51 Mustangs you wouldn't go wrong with this book - well worth the price and time to read.
