Darby Buckingham, weighty writer of dime novels and product of the New York City streets where he learned to use his fists, heads out in search of the Western experience in this latest from McCarthy (The Ambushers, Audio Reviews, LJ 12/94). Infuriated by his first sight of the brutal treatment of mustangs driven in from the Nevada range, he swears to do something about it in spite of lethal opposition from the rancher Hightower and Hightower's ramrod, Paxton. Darby assembles a crew that includes a half-crazy, broken-down mustanger, a 19-year-old horseman, a gritty and gun-toting female, and two elderly buffalo hunters. Their suspenseful endeavors are enthusiastically read by Gene Engene. Recommended for Western collections.?Sister Avila, formerly with Acad. of the Holy Angels, Minneapolis
