May 1999
Nevada, the early 1880s: an increasingly profitable trade is springing up called mustanging--the breaking and selling of rogue horses to the highest bidder. When Pete Sills, an eager apprentice mustanger, signs on at the Cross T Ranch, all he wants is to learn the trade. But as soon as he meets Candy, the ranch owner's daughter, all that changes. First time in paperback.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

A fast-paced story set in Nevada during the Civil War years. Pete Sills, a 19-year-old mustanger par excellence, hunts and breaks wild mustangs for the Cross T ranch. When Tyson, the owner, plans to exterminate the mustangs to save grazing land for cattle, Pete opts to save the mustangsa difficult choice. Another choice is between the two women who love himCandy Tyson, spoiled, seductive daughter of the ranch owner, and Maria Kelly, who would fight at his side. All this makes for a compelling story, with breathtaking descriptions of mustanging and battles with people and horses. Good entertainment for action-loving readers. 3.0 out of 5 stars MUSTANGERS WAS A LITTLE SLOW!!!!, July 27, 2001
By
This review is from: The Mustangers (Mass Market Paperback)
I have read several books by Gary McCarthy. I don't think this was one of his best. It is the story of Pete Sills, a young man who is learing the business of being a mustanger. He has bcome one of the best. It is about his love for Candy, the owners daughter and also Maria, a girl who really loves him. All he wants to do is catch wild horses. Candy finally leaves with a Dr. and he and Maria get married. He has made a foe in Lester Barron, who wants to kill all the wild horses to make room for cattle to feed. Lester and his men try to kill Pete and Maria, but in the end right wins out. As Pete quotes his friend Jack Kendall, " If a man died having had one good woman, one good friend and one good horse, he should feel privileged to have lived so well." A short easy to read book but not the greatest by far.
