Mustek Portable DVD Player - A solid purchase,

I purchased two Mustek Players - the MP70 - and this one. Both have been very dependable. These Mustek players play about everything I can stick into them. Of course, they play DVD video. They also play MP3 CDs and MP3 DVDs. And they play MPEG 4/DIVX Video files. This is extremely nice, because you can put an entire movie on CD, or several movies on DVD. I like the fact that they come with 117v power supply, a car power supply, and a battery pack that lasts through about 3-4 hours of play. Both players have been completely dependable.

It's okay, but...,

I pretty much snatched this DVD player up because it was half-price at the local electronics chain -- and that's about the only real good point of this player. The screen was clear, the menu intuitive, and the player light, even with the battery pack attached. But the speaker sound quality was faint and tinny, and note that the player itself lacks directional arrows. For this functionality, you'll have to use the remote -- which doesn't attach to the DVD player, so may just get lost at the gym. The battery pack attaches to the back of the unit, a minor note but makes the player a little larger and cumbersome than the photo implies. And that little metal sticker at the lower left hand corner doesn't peel away cleanly -- it will leave stickum on the player which you'll have to remove with a solvent. It's a shame that DVD players aren't displayed well at stores and that there're so many models to choose from. At least DVD player prices seem to be falling, so we can at least pick up a cheap model that we don't mind breaking when we go to the gym or let the kids use it.

Good product, at a reasonable price. I paid Amazon $95 with free shipping. It works well on airplane trips on a battery. It also works well as a connected DVD player in our bedroom (connected to our TV), where we watch movies only occasionally. Nice touch is the included remote control (credit card size). Excellent quality picture, sound could be a little bit louder.

It will entertain the kids in the back seat, and you can also take it into the hotel room to play back movies on the hotel TV. It plays DVDs, VCDs, and to my surprise, SVCDs. Super Video CDs are a higher quality VCD, burned onto a regular CD, that have near DVD quality. It comes with all the cables for hook up to a regular TV, as well as a 12V auto cord, wall charger/110V adapter, earbuds, and the remote. Don't lose the remote. Without it you can't do anything except play and stop. BTW, you can make your own SVCDs from your digital camera home movies. You need NERO with the MPEG plug, a CD burner, and ordinary cheap CDRs.

One of the few players that can play a varity of formats.
Plays divx, mp4, avi, mpeg1,2, vcd, svcd besides dvd mp3 etc. Bought one new for $50 after MIR and was impressed by the fact that it can play most video formats. Not the best looking or solid player out there but cant beat the features and price.

Good value for the money, good picture, cheap housing,

Like another reviewer I bought this dvd player for half price ($49). Screen is clear and bright. My first run of the battery I was able to get 2.5 hours of playback with the volume at about half. Like many others have complained sound output is terrible. Unit is package with all the acc. you would need, av cables, dc cable, remote, and home charger. Plastic housing is very delicate, and cheap, it is only a matter of time before I destroy one or more of the latches. The hinge that connects lcd lid to the rest of unit is especially fragile with no release. It pops open only under pressure. Overall good buy for the money but I would not spend more than 60-70 for this, or buy a good comprehensive service plan or something.

This player did not even play one entire movie before it broke. I guess you get what you pay for. I am throughly disappointed and embarrassed it was a gift for a grand child.

I bought this item last month and i was very upset when i saw the image quality. I have another portable dvd player (Initial company) and ther picture quality is wonderful. I am also not happy with the apperance of the item.
We have to user remote for all the functional activites which is again a drawback.

okay for the price,
This review is from: Mustek MP72 7-Inch Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
I bought this lightly used for $35, and even with that I have some buyer's remorse. The battery would not hold a charge, and some online reviews suggested this is a common problem. Unfortunately it didn't come with a car adapter, so I had to buy one from the company for $23. The disc cover is pretty flimsy and has already broken, although it does still play. If your DVD's are in less than pristine condition, you will likely run into playback problems. That said, the playback quality is actually pretty decent, so if you're looking for a lower=priced player, it's okay.

..I guess I'm just going to have to accept the planned obsolescence of all DVD (and CD) players that I purchase. I look for the best price of course, and if I get a couple of years out of one before the battery, power pack and/or player quits working then I'll assume I got my money's worth and buy another. (If I can afford it-Unfortunately I can't)
I call it planned obsolescence simply because the company doesn't want to sell replacement batteries or power packs, and they certainly don't last long enough. And, even if they offered affordable replacements they would probably outlast the DVD drive motor. (Mine is getting sluggish on start up now and that's the warning that it will soon spin its last revolution) None of my drive motors from any manufacturer have made it to the three year mark when used regularly. I was really pleased and had high hopes for this MUSTEK MP72 player, and, I'd have paid what they asked for one that would last as long as my other consumer electronics, or the company would stand behind it if it didn't. |
