5.0 out of 5 stars Adam Tepedelen - WAKE the F&@k up!, October 31, 2005
This review is from: Must've Been High (Audio CD)
Do you understand humour; irony; what entails a good time? Does your definition of "country" music lie a bit broader than Rascal Flats and the Dixie Chicks?

Listen to this lp. Better yet, catch the Supersuckers LIVE when they do the "Big Show" which, for the uninitiated, is an HOUR of country; about 20 minutes of Eddie SOLO and another HOUR of the full-on Supersuckers rock experience.

After witnessing this all-star marathon, buy their lps (start with LA MANO CORNUDA and then try EVIL POWERS OF ROCK & ROLL). Top it off with MUST'VE BEEN HIGH and you'll "get it."

Then, email Adam Tepedelen and ask him how he sleeps at night!

Enjoy!

Dusty

5.0 out of 5 stars Adem Tepedelen needs his head examined!, July 20, 2004
This review is from: Must've Been High (Audio CD)
After reading Amazon.com's review by Adem Tepedelen, I'm happy to find that Amazon.com customers have good taste, even if Adem doesn't! This record rocks. To suggest that the band is in over their heads makes me wonder if Adem even bothered to listen to the record??? Must've Been High is a great little record by a band that (thankfully) doesn't take themselves too seriously. Is this is a *serious* country record? H*ll no! It's a great rock-n-roll band taking a chance on something new, different, and challenging...and winding up producing an excellent record. No matter how often I hear it, I never get bored...and I can't say that for many albums these days.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kick arse lyrics and music..., October 9, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Must've Been High (Audio CD)
I blindly bought this CD expecting music like what is on "Smoke of Hell" and "Evil Powers of Rock and Roll", and was thoroughly impressed! The Supersuckers can rock the goodness right out of you, and they can definitely twang it out of you as well.

The lyrics are funny and can be quite touching as well, but not in that creepy sort of touchy way...you know...like that creepy uncle who wants to call you slugger and wrestle with you on the floor even though your way too old. I mean that the lyrics make you want to go rumbling down a dirt road somewhere with the sun setting in front of you as you say, "Sheeyit, that looks nice. Can you hand me a Pabst from the cooler in the back?" to your woman. You know, nice sentimental feelings.

Most country music doesn't tend to complicate issues with vague or cryptic descriptions, and that typifies the Supersuckers approach. The Supersuckers aren't just the best Rock 'n Roll band in the world, they're the best country band in the world, too. If you don't agree, then you have no place buying a Supersuckers CD anyway. If you already like the Supersuckers, then you should buy every CD by them you can.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't listen to Adam Tepedelen, this is a great record, October 19, 2005

This review is from: Must've Been High (Audio CD)
This is not so much a record review as it is a reviewer review. I am in full agreement with R. Wyatt. Amazon's editorial reviewer Adam Tepedelen is dead wrong about this record. I wonder if he has any sense of humor at all. This is not a serious record and is not intended to be. I have had it since it came out in 1997 and it remains one of my favorite records. I own many thousands of vinyl records and cd's and I listen to "Must've Been High" regularly, which is more than I can say for so many other records that I have bought since this one came out. This is a fun record, from a band that does not take itself too seriously. It is not mainstream country by any means. Thank god for that. I wonder what Adam does like? I probably wouldn't like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars This CD is definitely more country than punk, April 10, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Must've Been High (Audio CD)
This album is billed as punk-country music, which I would agree with, but its definitely more country than punk. Its punk music in the sense that its simple, but its definitely not loud and fast. The country influence comes from the vocals and instruments they use such as a Dobro and a fiddle, but don't let that turn you off because this album definitely lacks the elements that make country music annoying. I think the people that claim this album isn't country music just don't want to admit that they like a country album. Besides country and punk, I also hear some surf-guitar influences here and there, which is good to see.

This album is simple but effective, and it is unlike any other album I've heard. I rate this album somewhere between four and five stars.

I came across this disc by chance - I wandered into a store that had it on, and was immediately intrigued by the sound. All I can say is, I'm glad this is the first Supersuckers record I was exposed to, because otherwise, I probably would never have heard it at all. I love this disc, but I find their other albums close to unlistenable. I'm not a big fan of humor in my music, but this record is a killer mix of stripped-down rootsy tunes and hilarious ballbreaking lyrics that rise far above the level of the bathroom jokes in most punk/cowpunk songs (including their other efforts). Lots of favorites here - Roadworn and Weary, The Captain, Barricade, their cover of Hungover Together (one of the most creative relationship songs ever!), and the title track are all great, but One Cigarette Away is just a CLASSIC, the kind of tune I can hum for days on end. As a departure, there's also a crankin' hidden track (Supersucker Drive-by Blues) that's so cleverly written it always makes me laugh, featuring a guitar break so blistering you'll want to hose down your speakers. When I listen to this CD, I envision Lowell, Jimi, Pigpen and Hank Sr. all raising a glass in toast, wherever they may be. I may never spin another Supersuckers disc in my life, but this one will go with me to my next desert island.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kick back, enjoy., May 12, 2001

This is one album that will really stick in your head for a while. Tracks like "Must've Been High" and "roamin' round" make for great Sunday music after a rough weekend, or the drive home from wherever. Musicians will appreciate the effort to go back to the roots of recording (only ten microphones were used in the recording). Overall this is a great album, great guest appearances, and not to shabby for a rock n roll band.

4.0 out of 5 stars Welcome to Supersucker Country, October 14, 2006
This review is from: Must've Been High (Audio CD)
This album is to country music what Herb Alpert was to jazz. Not really of the genre, but a hell of a lot of fun to listen to. Giddyup and yeehaw and all that rot. It rocks; it's the Supersuckers; can you ever expect anything less? Still dosen't compare though to in my opinion what has to be one of the most rockin' albums of ALL TIME; The Smoke of Hell! If you really want to rock, it will rock your f'n socks off brother!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tongue in cheek country shenanigans., June 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Must've Been High (Audio CD)
You can never get tired of this awesome album. It goes down smooth with some whiskey and the Smoke of Hell. With "Hired Guns" from Willie Nelson's band adding the authentic country feel, while remaining very typical of the supersuckers.

To fully experience this album, you must see them perform the country set live. To appreciate their lyrics you must be equipped with a little savvy and sense of humour.

They remain the Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the world, and not too bad at the country Game either.

I just wanted to echo the other reviewers that this is an incredible album. Don't believe the "expert" reviewer he has no idea what he is talking about. If you get one Supersucker album this is the one!
