A French classic, June 12, 2005
This review is from: Musulmanes (Audio CD)
I use the term "classic" because this is an album that truly stands the test of time. I bought this CD many years ago - I can't remember where - while looking for some popular French music that I might find entertaining. I have always been a francophile and devoted student of the language, and I wanted to expose myself to French culture on any level. I immediately fell in love with the intensely felt songs on this album. From the very first song, Musulmanes, you are drawn into Sardou's special world, which values emotion and substance over flashy effects. Granted, there are elements and devices that solidly reveal this album's mid-80's origins, but the enjoyment I've gotten from the songs on this album is always fresh, every time I listen to it. Surprisingly, one of the most effective songs is "Feminin comme," with its cute wordplay ("feminin comme... virilité" [!]) Sardou's voice is easy on the ears, as well... masculine, comforting, passionate... and French! What more could you ask for? Although comparisons are unfair because they may evoke the wrong imagery, not to mention minimalize each singer's unique qualities, I have to say that Sardou in many ways reminds me of a French Neil Diamond.
This is an album with truly lasting appeal, and I recommend that 'les amateurs de musique française' get their hands on it before it becomes too hard to find.
