5.0 out of 5 stars high class
Just what I expected from big gipp goodie. Funky beats, creativity, and sheer genious. A dungeon masterpiece featuring classics like the "boogie man" f/ 3000.

3.0 out of 5 stars Goodie Mob should get back together
As a fan of the DF, Goodie Mob, and OutKast, it makes me shudder to have to listen through a decent, but not great, solo effort provided by Big Gipp. The Mob used to churn out classics like they were Big Macs. But, that was a day in the past and now we have to deal with the Lumberjacks and 'Lo on his own (though he is fine alone, by all means). Anyway, Gipp spits through...

Anyway, Gipp spits through a lengthy 16 tracks and does a decent job throughout. I would say that he put forth more effort lyrically on his solo album than he did on One Monkey Don't Stop No Show. "Steppin Out" is great. "Boogie Man" is interesting. But the CD blends together too much and becomes somewhat monotonous, and not at all extravagant. Mob fans get it, though it might disappoint you just a little bit.

2.0 out of 5 stars the flow was tight the Music missing, October 4, 2003
This review is from: Mutant Mindframe (Audio CD)
Big Gipp has SKills for days.in fact I was always more into Goodie Mob a Bit more than Outkast over time.Big Gipp has alot of depth&touches on alot of subject matter that should be heard&never forgotten.especially the Atlanta Child Murders that still takes me back.but the music&Grooves overall don't have enough bite to them.but still worth hearing for Gipps presentation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Steppin Out...Feeling Good, September 22, 2003
This review is from: Mutant Mindframe (Audio CD)
Big Gipp of the Goodie Mob, steps out from the Group's shadow to release his debut album Mutant Mindframe, following suit from the rest of the Mob who have all done solo albums. After moderate success of `Steppin Out' which is a smoothed out playa track-a great summertime classic, different from most Dirty South singles, Gipp plans on delivering the goods. Gipp's lyrics are definitely socially conscious, and his ghetto preacher; teacher; mentor style really hits home. An album with substance. The flow, as always, is Gipps smooth rugged voice effortlessly riding the beats.

We get some vintage Goodie Mob flava with `Make The People Say', which has it's own chillin crunk vibe. Not exactly crunk but think if you were at the crib chillin wit ya folk; if this song came on then everybody would just be bobbin their head grooving to it. That's what it's like. And if you want crunk you Gipp got it with `You Buck We Buck' and on `Wildout' a semi-neptune sounding beat. Andre 3000 shows up for the futuristic, rule breaking, Boogie Man. Pushing the envelope as only the Dungeon Family can. The chorus is really tight. You want the laid back pimp track perfect for that anytime riding with heavy bass just cruising? All Over Your Body with Eightball is where it's at. However after that song the album kinda slows down. Some songs are disappointed such as the `New' Goodie Mob collaboration "Lets Fight", as well as Strange, and Hystery Mystery. 3 Words is just surprisingly plain out wack. There are some solid songs at the end such as `Make It Happen', These Times, and Zone Three.

Mutant Mindframe has a regional sorta feel and probably won't make any more noise than it already has outside of the South. But if you liked any of Goodie Mob's albums or like Dungeon Family than you should definitely pick this up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lost treasure, May 27, 2009
This review is from: Mutant Mindframe (Audio CD)
Just found this CD in my closet, and boy was I happy. I lost it when my hard drive went down a couple years ago, and hadn't been able to find the CD. This is classic, down south, funky, dirty Gipp. He brings his own unique flow and has picked some fantastic, "mutant" beats for this album. If you like good music, good flow, and no "drugs & money" BS,then you'll like this one. It's one of my classic, no-one-else-knows-about-it joints.

Standout tracks include:
Steppin Out feat. Sleepy Brown
Creeks feat. Witchdoctor
Make the People Say
History Mystery
These Times

ANd, to be honest, I don't dislike any track except Wildout.

If you like this CD, then go get Dungeon Family's CD, "Even in Darkness".

2.0 out of 5 stars Beats and hooks prevent Gipp from delivering solid debut, August 18, 2003
By

This review is from: Mutant Mindframe (Audio CD)
I got this album after seeing the video for "Steppin Out," the addictive lead single with Sleepy Brown. With as much attention Cee-lo has gotten as the breakout solo artist from Goodie Mob, I was surprised with how much Gipp has grown lyrically. His delivery is always smooth, and the album touches on subjects of women, street life, and conciousness with the same balance as we heard on Witchdoctor's album. Gipp is a better rapper, but unfortunately his debut isn't backed by the Dungeon Family like Witchdoctor's was. Instead, almost all of the production is handled by DJ Speedy.

The hooks and beats really hold Gipp back, in that order. A majority of the hooks are bad, and nearly all of the songs follow the verse-hook-verse-hook-verse-hook formula, so it is a repeating problem. A lot of the beats are lacking the soul we're used to hearing from the Goodie Mob, and generally sound dated.

The album isn't without highlights, which are headlined by the aforementioned "Steppin Out." The last few tracks deliver what the rest of the album had promised. "Creeks" had Gipp and Witchdoctor on the subject of missing and murdered children. "History Mystery" questions the differences between history, belief, and rumor. "Zone Three" is a smooth and soulful collaboration with Big Rube. But the balance of the album is filled with weakly agressive cuts like "You Buck, We Buck" and "Let's Fight."

To sum it all up, the beats are bland enough that even the first time I listened to it it was hard to pay attention. I will not sleep on future releases by Gipp, but hopefully he'll get better help.
