Interesting, if lacking direction.,
This review is from: Mutation (Remnants, 5) (Paperback)
From the first page - on which the somewhat disgusting and definitely unique mutation on the cover is described - onward my full opinion of the series of events consisted of one word: "What???" With event after event and plot twist after plot twist, I found myself at the end of a somewhat short novel in a completely different state of mind than at the beginning. The characters are killed off or changed dramatically with each chapter - which does, if not anything else, make for an interesting story. All the characters have been developed wonderfully (or horribly, depending on your point of view) and the "good guys" and "bad guys" aren't as clear as they seemed to be in Book 1. There was much too little of Tamara and her baby - especially after the past few books have brought interesting foreshadowing and info about them - but I suppose that's what more books are for. The books never focus on one character or situation in particular, which makes a confusing web of different paths, and no clear direction. The end...well...for the sake of not revealing too much, I'll just say the end was a strange way to pull things together. Off to wait impatiently for book 6. . . :)

The struggle continues...,
This review is from: Mutation (Remnants, 5) (Paperback)
Billy and Mo'Steel have been separated from the rest of the group and are trapped in the basement of what seems to be the ship. There they meet two Remnants, Alberto and his son Kubrick. Kubrick, however, has gone through a strange mutation that makes him into a living, breathing monster or whatever you'd like to call it. The four struggle with another dangerous environment below and find a surprising discovery, Mother.Jobs, 2Face, Yago, and the rest of the Remnants are still trapped on the Constitution and time is running out because the ship is capsizing fast. Not only that but British war ships are attacking them all at the same time. Can Billy, the kid who stayed awake for 500 years, help save them? Can he beat Mother at a mind game that he can't even control? This was another edge of your seat edition ofr Remnants where more weird thing happened that at times were confusing. The switching from node to node made things even more complicated. Still this book overall was pretty good. Can't wait for the rest of the Remnants books.

Another mystery has now begun...,
This review is from: Mutation (Remnants, 5) (Paperback)
Billy Weir is a mystery. A brilliant mind living in the shadow of his fellow Remnants and with the strange ability to see the future -- or something like the future. When him and Mo'Steel are almost killed by aliens but manage to stay alive together, they find themselves isolated from the rest of the crew and are struggling to find their ways back. Mo'Steel and the others have always wondered what Billy Weir is really like, and now it's Mo'Steel's chance to finally understand who he really is. But when they meet Kubrick, a boy who with a tragic accident that left his body shattered and caused him to look horrific -- they realize that they're not the only ones who need help and to be safe. They may able to get back to Jobs, 2Face, Yago, Violet Blake, and the others if they keep searching, but first they have to understand exactly what Kubrick is all about, and what he wants. What is Kubrick's role... and how will this affect the Remnants? Remnants #5: Mutation is the mysterious and dramatic addition to the series, with a unique twist and fast-paced storyline that restores some of the excitement in the series.

ITS NOT GOOD IIITTTSSS GGGGGRRRREEEEEAAAAATTTTT,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Mutation (Remnants, 5) (Paperback)
Remnants: Mutation is a great book about a group of people who get trapped on an insane ship that can make different living environments. I think the climax of the story is when some of the main characters are stuck in an environment that the computer of the ship and Billy Wiere, one of the main characters, are trying to make in different ways. Even though this book is short I would highly recommend it to someone who has a little spare time on his or her hands.

My Book Share,

This review is from: Mutation (Remnants, 5) (Paperback)
I did my book share on Remnants: Mutation. In the beginning a boy (Kubrick) was getting cut up in squares.he lost his hair and skin. There was no pain though. Latter in the book Mo Steel and Billy were in a cell with pipes dripping. They were all wet. They got knocked off a projected ship were on top giant squids and blue meanies were fighting. If you want to find out what happens next. read the book.

The Discovery,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Mutation (Remnants, 5) (Paperback)
Two of the survivors find a new Remnant they didn't know about, who has suffered a strange mutation. This is where the book series gets a bit repetitive, meaning: They've been on this ship for 3 books so far, I mean there's a little to much detail. I'm not putting the series down, I'm obsessed with it!! All that I'm saying is a little more happening would be good. The cover is also pretty gross. Whoever designed it shouldn't have showed the guy's face, I mean why not show Mo or something? (I'm pretty sure it's Jobs on the first book)

Mutations starts book 5 of the Remnants with a bang, or gross-out if you will. We catch up with a boy named Kubrick, who's had his skin taken off and replaced by a coating that doesn't allow him to feel pain, and is completely transparent. Now that would make you go a little nuts, but luckily, Kubrick is too mad at his dad and the world to actually come to grips with his new creepy state of being.
From the first chapter we rejoin the rest of the gang aboard the Constitution which for me gets a little boring with all the nautical terms for getting that pesty sail down in a ferociousness storm. Then the weird Billy Weir saves the day, and we have a look inside his mind, which has been twisted by the war he survived in his youth. Maybe he's more than a little off because of the contrast of his life before, the war-torn city to the perfectly safe, upper-middle class world of his adoptive family, and it's just too much for his young brain to handle. Did Billy go insane from the 500 years he spent awake but paralyzed on the Mayflower? Or was he already going over the edge because of the juxtaposition of his current life compared to his previous life? Again, Applegate gives us lots of food for thought to chew on as she explores her characters one by one. A worthwhile series just to explore the complexities of what it means to be human. |
