Editorial Reviews

Review

Re-forming his trio with a new bassist and drummer, guitarist Caspar Brötzmann also seemed to take a slightly different tack on this album. One of the chief attractions of his earlier records was the sense of being on the edge of chaos, as though the rough-hewn rock structures were only just capable of holding in the surging music he created. Here things are substantially streamlined. Brötzmann's tone is cleaner and somewhat less fuzz-laden than before, and drummer Robert Dammig's attack is crisper and more precise than his predecessor Danny Lommen. ---All Music Guide

5.0 out of 5 stars A Firestorm of Guitar, October 16, 2000

I've been a fan for a few years, and this is in my opinion his best work yet. The Hendrix comparisons are definitely still warranted, but there's more at work here now. Brotzmann has done three things which really are effective. First, he's developed a more tuneful (if not "melodic") approach which brings to mind Richard Thompson in places as well as Hendrix. Second, he's now working with a drummer who departs from the Swans-style dirge-tempo that seemed to never vary on the older releases, and in fact there's some very good drumming here. Third, NO VOCALS, a big plus. There's only guitar, bass (albeit mixed low) and drums/cymbals on this CD. Stunning and varied compositions...though Brotzmann ranks with Justin Broadrick (Godflesh) in his guitar-as-destructive-device approach, this flows and grooves and evokes even when it's "noise." Put it on for your next nighttime desert drive.

5.0 out of 5 stars different than his other material, but still incredible, December 15, 2001

hmmmm. this is much, much different than anything else ive heard from brotzmann. his previous two albums, koksofen and home, both rely on the steady, hammering rhythms of the drums and the steady rumbling of the bass, while the guitar chimes flow about and weave in and out of each other, ranging from disturbing, ear splitting rage to distant, dark noodling. this, on the other hand, employs other means of stumping the listener. the bass isnt as prominent, the drums are more fusion-driven, and brotzmann's guitar playing sounds like hendrix on quaaludes and mild-grade acid. its still just as incredible as his other stuff, if not more, but dont expect any of his 'guitar deconstruction' tactics here, cause youll only get a couple minutes worth, at most.
