4.0 out of 5 stars An Anthony mega-trilogy rolled into one novel
Piers Anthony's "Mute" is, I feel, one of his best novels. It contains all the elements of his classic series, like the Incarnations of Immortality and Bio of a Space Tyrant, but, you don't have to spend all your money to buy five books. Anthony takes the classic Man vs. Society and puts it into a sci-fi atmosphere like only he knows how. I realize that...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great
As usual, the story starts off brilliantly. The Knot character is really great and you can't wait to find out all about CC. Then you get into chicken teleporters and flea eggs... Still worth the read.

I realize that Anthony is best known for his Fantasy novels (Xanth, really), but his science fiction is excellent. I would rate Anthony in the likes of Heinlein, and perhaps Mute will become Anthony's "Stranger in a Strange Land"

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Space Opera, February 25, 2005
This review is from: Mute (Hardcover)
This is quite an enjoyable read. Although set in the far future, this novel contains many of the elements that readers of other Anthony books will recognize; each person (or mutant in this case) has a special talent (sometimes more than one). Our hero's talent is that he is quickly 'forgotten' after you meet him....gone...poof! Right out of your mind. Luckily he is a very moral man\mutant!
For better Scifi from Piers Anthony check out Macroscope, or the Cluster Series of books, or his Orn\Ox\Omnivore series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definately a GOOD read!, July 3, 1997

In my opinion, this really is one of his best books. It is up to par with his incarnations and Xanth series, except you don't have to buy a million books. It was worth the read, definately. It encompasses all the whole genre of scifi, both the fantasy part and the space part. You have your fantasy story in a spacial setting. No matter how hard to find it is, I would recommend this book

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible, August 21, 2005
This review is from: Mute (Hardcover)
This was the novel that finally made me realize what a complete and utter hack Piers Anthony is. I read it over 20 years ago but the memories are still all too strong.

This novel emphasizes two things that are common throughout most of Anthony's work: lazy plotting and a truly juvenile attitude towards women and sex. In this book, Anthony uses a "trick" that he also used in Macroscope: he sets his heroes up with some incredibly difficult task which is arduous to complete. Yet, once they have solved the problem the first time, the heroes blithely perform the same action repeatedly, whenever called for by the plot, without the slightest indication that they once considered it as difficult as climbing Mt. Everest. It's an incredibly lazy way of writing, and particularly annoying to read.

As for the female characters, as usual, they are there only to provide tittilation. Anthony's conception of sexual relations has all the subtlety of the boys' room in a junior high school. For any reader with a mental age above 14, this book (and, truth be told, most of Anthony's work) should be avoided at all costs.

5.0 out of 5 stars His BEST book ever!!!, January 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Mute (Paperback)
I read this book years ago (12) and found it truely exciting. I am an avid Xanth series reader, and eagerly await the newest releases in this ongoing saga, but MUTE is be far Anthony's best single volumn novel to date. I have searched for this book since the first time I read it--when I checked it out of the local library--and am finally glad to have added it to my personal collection via Amazon.com.

5.0 out of 5 stars HIS BEST NOVEL TO DATE IN MY OPINION!!!!!!, March 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Mute (Paperback)
MUTE HAS TO BE THE BEST NOVEL I HAVE READ OF PIERS ANTHONY TO DATE. THOUGH I READ THE NOVEL MANY YEARS AGO, I HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN THE MESMERIZING QUALITY OF READING I RECEIVED FROM IT. I HAVE NOT READ ANY OTHER NOVEL LIKE IT. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS NOVEL TO ANYONE. I EVEN CONVERTED A NON-READER TO A READER AFTER THEY READ THIS NOVEL.
