This review is from: Self-Mutilation (Opposing Viewpoints) (Paperback)
This book is not so much about self harm and the different wiewpoints of it, it's talks more about plastic surgery and wether it count as self harm or not (actually more than one third of the book is dedicated plastic surgery) and different rituals containg tatoos, scarification and such.
The chapters actually discussing self harm are not very thought-provoking, they mainly convey he main stream wiews on the topic and does not have the courage to move too far from these. It does have some chapters that are nice to read for self-harmers, with suggestions for alternative coping mechanisms and a supportive voice. There are however too much "this is stupid and everryone who does this kind of thing wants to stop as soon as possible", even if it's not stated that obvoius. I would have expected voices with an more accepting attitude towards self harm also, along with people expressing extreme disgust towards self harmers, considering the title. Okay text collection, but not so much food for thought. |
