This review is from: Mutiny of the Bounty and Story of Pitcairn Island 1790-1894 (Hardcover)
We all know the popular romanticized story of the mutiny of the HMS Bounty in 1789, but few of us know of the descendants of those mutineers who marooned themselves on the remote island of Pitcairn. Fewer still know that their descendents continue to exist on the island of Pitcairn to this very day.
This book was originally published in 1894, just 100 years after the mutiny. The author, Rosalind Amelia Young, was the daughter of the second oldest man of the community at the time of his death, in September 1893 and was a grandson of John Adams, one of the original mutineers of the Bounty, whose death took place in 1829. Ms. Young had both first hand knowledge and the knowledge her father passed down to her, making her prehaps the best source for an accurate story of the island history of those first 100 years. Young narrates her story beginning with a true account of the mutiny of the Bounty. She then traces the history of the settlement at Pitcairn Island from 1789 through 1894. She includes tidbits from the lives of various settlers. She includes the wreck of the Cornwallis, the wreck of the Oregon and the visit of the missionary ship Pitcairn. The book is illustrated with photos and her accounts of island industries. The narration is a bit dry so it will not appeal to everyone. If you enjoy reading non-fiction and are interested in the history behind the descendants of the Bounty, then I highly recommend reading this book. It's chock-full of valuable information about the settlement on Pitcairn Island. |
