Book Description

April 1989
Who has not heard of the mutiny on the Bounty? For two hundred years this event has fired the imagination of millions of people, countless books have been written on it, and five motion pictures so far dramitized it on the screen. This book is unique in the literature on the mutiny and is the first companion volume to the story. The first part, the Bounty Chronicle, gives a panoramic, yet detailed, month-by-month account of the events, starting before the Bountys departure and ending with Fletcher Christians death on Pitcairn Island. It even chronicles Captain Blighs second breadfruit expedition of which so many people are unaware. The second part of the book, the Bounty Encyclopedia, is full of all the exciting and fascinating details surrounding this great story.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Wahlroos has written a thorough companion volume for mutiny on the Bounty buffs. The first part is a strict chronological retelling of the mutiny, month by month. Thus, readers can find out what the mutineers and Christian were doing while Bligh was sailing his open boat back to Timor. The second part is an "Encyclopedia" section which is alphabetical by name, subject, or place. For key characters in the "Encyclopedia" section there is detailed information on that person, as well as references to the appropriate month and year in the "Chronicle" section. Wahlroos has really done his work. His thorough bibliography contains almost 600 citations. In addition, because of his many visits to Tahiti and his extensive South Pacific sailing experience, he is able to sustain the "romantic" flavor of the mutiny story. A remarkable book.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCITING, DRAWS EVERYTHING TOGETHER!!!, December 8, 2002

This review is from: Mutiny and Romance in the South Seas: A Companion to the Bounty Adventure (Hardcover)
I truly enjoyed this book. I loved the way it was laid out in chronological order. It was easy to pick up and read for a few minutes, without getting so engrossed you couldn't leave. (But if you had a lot of time to spend, you could get engrossed then!) Each month is approximately 2 pages, and includes information on different scenarios--The Bounty, Tahiti, Pitcairn, Bligh's launch, England--wherever there is something important happening at the time that is known about, all of it is included. The author's views are presented in a manner which lets you know they are his views only, but are done in a very non-assuming way. This book is pleasant, exciting and very informational--it really draws everything together. Highly recommended!!!...

This review is from: Mutiny and Romance in the South Seas: A Companion to the Bounty Adventure (Hardcover)
Dr. Sven Wahlroos' book "Mutiny and Romance in the South Seas" provides a careful review of the Bounty mutiny without taking any sides. His analysis exposes the underlying tensions that ultimately led to the undoing of everyone involved. Reading this book cannot help but be an enriching experience for anyone who has pondered the situations that led to Bligh's epic voyage in an open boat and Christian's sad end on Pitcairn.
