5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for skate fans
What a great story. For those of you who don't know, Rodney Mullen is arguably the most influential and important skater in modern street skating. This story isn't so much about a misfit becoming one the greatest skaters of all time, as it is about a person's struggle to win the respect and love of a demanding and intimidating father, who can't accept him for who he is...

3.0 out of 5 stars Compelling story from an interesting man, amateurly written
Mullen has certainly become a legendary figure in the skateboarding world. However, skateboarding with such dedication has apparently afforded him little opportunity to find his literary voice.

This is a standard play-by-play autobiography, and the Mutt cuts an eccentric and striking figure. People interested in Mullen, his youth, and transitions in the waxing...

This is a sad, courageous, and inspiring story that is most of all, a very human story. A very quick read that's hard to put down. There's not a boring page to be found.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspriational Story, July 30, 2005

Keith R. Lammon (Fort Payne, AL United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The first time I saw Rodney Mullen was in 1986 at the University of Florida. I was between classes and, obviously Rodney was too. I was a skateboarder from 1976 to 1980 and had kept up with what was going on after that so, I knew who Rodney Mullen was. For about 30 minutes, I watched him do the most amazing tricks I had ever seen. He was skating by himself and I was the only one watching him.

Now that I am 40, my 11 year old son is getting into skateboarding. I wondered, "Whatever happened to Rodney Mullen?"

I found this book through a search for "Rodney Mullen" on Amazon. His story is very inspirational. I'm glad that he was able to find peace with his father and find happiness.

I can't imagine anyone doing for skateboarding what Rodney Mullen has done.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Most Important book on Skateing you shall ever read!, August 24, 2004
A Kid's Review
This is the story of Rodney Mullen, the most important street/freestyle skater ever. In this book you read about his life, from his birth, to first skateboard, to winning the world championship in freestyle. You will also read about how he started four of the most known skate companies ever; Enjoi, Almost, World Industries, and Tensor Truck co.. Included in this book is his story of growing up with a father that made his children give up there favorite pass times to pursue the fathers dreams of growing up succesfully. This is, no doubt, the most important book on skaeting ever; From Rodney Mullen inveting the flat ground ollie (or just ollie) to making the 'magic flip' (kickflip) to then creating of 30 of todays most popular tricks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, January 10, 2005
Im a skater and this booked made me relize alot of things about rodney i didnt ever know. The main thing was about his father about how he always fights with him. Rodney is also like a super genious and a very religious guy. He is one of my favorite skaters and now this book had made me respect his work ethic and ability to hold on even when it gets tough.

5.0 out of 5 stars "The Mutt" is a must read, October 25, 2004
As a native Floridian it is cool to read about someone from Florda that has mabe a grave impact on the skateboarding world. I am a 11 year skater and have been a big fan of Rodney Mullen for a long time. This book should be on the shelves and coffee tables of every skater around the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Mutt is cool, October 12, 2006
In the book "The Mutt" it shows the life of Rodney Mullens struggles of becoming a pro skateboarder. This book kept me very interested through the whole book. This book wasn not like other autobiographies, this one had a very interesting story to it and was very exciting to read. It was very fun for me to read because I like to skateboard as well. I was able to see how difficult it was for him to get to the point of his life where he is now.
I liked this book also because of the information he shared of his childhood as skater. He showed things that i never knew about of when he was a child and an adult. In some sense i was able to compare some of my life to his. We both had struggles in School and with girls and have had some family issues. Which was one of the things that kept me interested in his book.
So in conclusion I think that all skaters should read this book. Im sure any skater can relate to this book. After finishing the book i lend it to a freind who i later found out that he enjoyed it as much as I did. So if any body likes autobiograpghies on sports athletes then i suggest reading this book. And this is why I enjoyed "The Mutt"

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius, May 14, 2007

Possibly the best book I ever read. Although the history of skating through Rodney's eyes is fascinating, the true treasure of this book is seeing the world through Rodney's eyes. It is a beautifully told story with generous honesty. Being a skater is irrelevant to liking this book. If you've ever been young and had dreams, then you should be reading it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR SKATERS, February 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I love this book. I'm 31 and totally new to skateboarding. I watched Rodney Mullen on an old You Tube video and got inspired. This guy is truly the greatest skateboarder in the world in the freestyle-street category. Reading his story in the book, i feel like i know him, and his struggles with the board. This is a great story, and it reinforces the struggle and self-realization we all have inside us in life. You don't even have to be a skater to enjoy this book, it can relate to anything and everything else you're passionate about. It's inspired me to really focus on learning tricks and trying really hard to better my newfound love for skating. BUY IT!
