Can't do without it., April 17, 2004

I used to check this out from the library for my children when they were small, and they would request it again and again, even through their teen years. It's funny and scary at the same time. They memorized all the dialogue, and are fond of quoting from it when funny or appropriate. The children are grown and the library doesn't have the video any more, but I'm getting a copy of my own for rainy Saturdays. This series of Appalachian folk tales made by Tom Davenport is really very good. I think the Davenports did an important thing by preserving these before they were totally gone. Some other titles in the series that I enjoyed were, "Bearskin", "Soldier Jack and the Dentist's Daughter", and "Bristlelip". I would recommend all of these because there is something very original and real about them. They are a refreshing divergence from popular culture.
