This is a fun game, no doubt about it. The graphics are great, the open environments are well laid out.

This is a fun game, no doubt about it. The graphics are great, the open environments are well laid out.

Customization is a bit limited in that the gear is already out of style (perfect example are the TLD helmets - a style that wasn't a hit 2 years ago and yet they're the only TLD choices in the game). They would have done well to allow color customization of generic gear - in addition to the brand name in the game. The bikes themselves, while looking like Yamahas, Hondas, Kawasakis, Hondas, and KTMs have bizarre names and limited plastic customization. They must have a trademark dispute going on with the Japanese makers.

Also, I race motorcycles in real life. Guys either race two wheels or four. I don't really have any interest in racing quads but to open locked areas of the game, the game forces you to race all the various vehicles. I would have preferred to have a MX ONLY career mode, unlocking all MX events. Also, I don't care about the freestyle mode and yet I have to play that to unlock MX-related areas.

As for the audio, I turned that down to zero almost immediately. The sound of the bikes is quite good and there's a definite difference between 2 strokes and 4 strokes.

The Supermoto is a refereshing addition but the tracks are way too wide open. Crank your bike up for full top end and you leave the pack behind almost immediately. Also, in real life the biggest visual difference for Supermoto is the slick tires. Yet the game has you race on the knobbies. A minor visual annoyance, yes, but they could have easily added street tires for the REAL look of Supermoto.

Overall a fun game with decent customization. Is it worth $60? No. Buy it when it hits $29.99.

The game is great except for one thing. The AUDIO! They had it pretty well figured out in Unleashed and for some reason, they took 2 steps back in Untamed. I can't really figure out why considering it is the same people that made Unleashed.. It sounds like a car instead of a bike and is so UNRealistic (the 2 stroke sounds pretty real though). Oh, one other thing, the clutch action is pretty lame too. It doesn't help much to cure a case of the bogs. I do like the brakes. The physics are better too and it is much more realistic in terms of launching jumps. No longer can you just clear an entire section that only a rocket bike should be able to clear. It is also less forgiving. If you screw up, you pay for it. Just like in real life. The computer generated competitors are much more competitive. Getting the holeshot is pretty difficult compared to Unleashed where holeshots were commonplace. All in all, it's a good game but they missed the boat on the engine sounds.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best of the Series, February 19, 2008
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Mx Vs ATV Untamed (Video Game)
Untamed is definitely the best of this series with improvements to the graphics and interface without any compromises to the great feel of riding off-road vehicles. It's no Dirt or Forza 2 in terms of graphics, but it is several steps better than its predecessors. The environments are varied and beautifully modelled and rendered. There are many fun elements to ride on and jump over and through. The achievements are distributed in a logical way and are challenging without being frustrating to obtain.

They have removed the aircraft from the newest version (which is no big loss) and added increased customization capability and a much welcomed test track while you wait for your selection to load.

A great game to play with kids of any age. My six year old has played two previous versions and especially loves the 'free ride' mode.

most realistic motocross game i have ever played. you can see the ruts, in first person camera you can see the handle bars, the viser, and the camera shakes as you hit bumps, simply put, awesome. the physics are better, its not so much like a car game where you just press the gas and go. the tracks are pretty cool, even the nationals. only downside is the rider stance is kinda beginnerish looking. too laid back not aggressive enough. awesome game. buy this game yesterday.

4.0 out of 5 stars I MAY QUIT WORK AND DUMP MY GIRLFRIEND TO PLAY THIS GAME 24 HOURS A DAY!, January 14, 2008

I've been riding motocross bikes for 12 years and playing motocross games when the snow falls and I can't ride.

This game is fantastic! I've played several other motocross games by rainbow studios (and other game companies) and with each release they've improved by leaps and bounds (no pun intended).

The pros about this game:
-The motocross and atv content in the game is outstanding. If ALL you want to do is play MX or ALL you want to do is race Quads, then this is the game for you!

-You can race head to head quad vs. MX (but I find that the bikes are much faster!

-Rhythm is VERY important in this game, just like in real life. You can use your head to figure out the best line and carve it up. Should you mess up somewhere, there are other lines that will get you back in rhythm--FIND THEM!

-Each track is different and the jumps aren't made from a cookie cutter map designer. In other words, jumps have a variety of irregular and regular lips. Go over the lower part of the lip if you've got too much speed, or go over the higher part to clear that tripple jump!

-Seat bounce! You can get extra air by utilizing the suspensions compression and rebound at the jumps face. Very handy for clearing a jump if you simply can't get enough speed.

-Customize your gear, rider, and bike! Tons of mods.

-Rider views are great. Even the 1st person camera works decently well.

-Music is great

-Graphics are superb

-Physics are excellent

-Tail whip and 'scrub' feature

-Replay value is excellent. Because of the varying terrain, tacks, and race types/configurations I don't see myself ever getting tired of this game.

-Online play (I haven't tried this yet. I want to figure out the fastest lines for all the tracks first).

Cons: (Most of these could be fixed with a patch, should Rainbows step it up a little bit)
-You lose a TON of speed if you get t-boned. It sometimes feels like you're not planted to the ground when another mx bike or atv comes along and pushes you across the dirt. It feels like you're an air hockey puck and you just go from 40-50mph to like 10. It's bs. In real life you'd either bang handle bars and brush away or fall down.

-The music gets redundant. I must have played last night for about 2 hours. It was great but I wish I could add my own songs from my Xbox 360 or if Rainbow had added like 10 more to mix it up a bit more. Not a big problem, just trying to nitpick.

-The 1st person rider view could be improved a little bit more. I'd like to see more head movement so I could see the gas tank of the bike or to be able to look behind me (perhaps I haven't figured out the control). Either way, it's difficult to tell the pitch of the bike when landing a jump from the first person view.

-I keep wishing for a motocross game that allows for BIKE IMPROVEMENTS, i.e. increased horsepower. Remember those old Road Rash games? Where you started out on a 'rat bike' or a slower bike and worked your way up to a really fast pro bike? That's what this game needs. A career mode.

-Some of the atv tracks drive me nuts. I simply can't get the rhythm down or get enough speed or momentum to get over some of the jump faces--seat bounce or not. I'll figure it out I suppose, but fat, lumbering atv's aren't really my cup of tea.

-The tail whip could be improved slightly. It's great you can control that aspect now, but I was able to do that in Motocross Madness 2, where there was no such feature. Simply hit the brake in mid air and turn to the side. Tail whip. This game doesn't really make you hang loose in a tail whip. It's more mechanical looking and not as fluid as it should be. Still a rather small nit-pick from someone who actually has experience on the track.

-The replay mode. I was very disappointed I was unable to save my replays or pause it and move around the camera angles and take pictures. Rainbow Studios, you NEED this feature. Take a look at the game Forza 2. You can watch, control, (rewind!), change camera angles, AND TAKE A PICTURE which saves it to your Xbox's memory. This is great because you can show it to your friends and it's just a neat little feature. Plus I'd imagine it wouldn't be a bad way to get some free marketing since a bunch of people will be showing pictures of the game.

All in all, if you're a fan of off-road you shouldn't even be reading this far. You should be running (not walking) to get your credit card and swipe it right away and BUY THIS GAME. This game, simply put, is going to get much MUCH more game play than my Call of Duty or Halo 3 games. PERIOD.

I have been a fan of Rainbow Studio since Motocross Madness and this game carries on the tradition of fun off road action. But don't expect a drastic revamp this time around, this is a very tried and trued formula with a bit of refinement. If you have played any of the other Rainbow Studio motocross games you know what to expect in this installment. It is certainly fun but its not really fresh, you can see it growing a bit long in the tooth. They have added some new race modes and vehicles but doesn't seem to add much to the series overall, granted they are fun but there seems to very little difference between racing the trucks, desert sleds, and monster trucks, just hold the gas and go for the most part.

The ATV and MX portions are of course were MX vx ATV shines as usual. The handling is arcadey but its also intuitive and distinct. The customization is also very fun as is the vehicle set up. The different race modes are very distinct and it takes a very different strategy to win in Supercross than it does in the Nationals. The AI is unfortunitly rather Road Rash than in outlook. Meaning of course they might not be able to beat you in the race but the are going to wreck the heck out of you. This can make things very frustrating at times but its just all the more reason to stay way out front.

The soundtrack is very good, it has a good mix of music and has the SoCal feeling to it with bands like Pennywise playing in the background. There song list isn't too long though and it can get repetitive as you make your way through the series. Speaking of series this can also be a drag at times. You will have to compete in all the race types to advance in the series point standings which means you will be racing events you might not be too fond off. Many of the races are also in the two race format which means it can be tedious at times.

Overall this is the best game in the series, the environments are good, as are the graphics and physics. I can certainly recommend this to veterans of the series and those new to it as well.
