1.0 out of 5 stars No useful instructions, December 28, 2009

In theory, this COULD be a good game. It would be nice, for example, if there were some sort of video instructions indicating what motion is to be made. I expected this to go through the basic ballet positions, and maybe progress to more movement around the floor off the balance board. Instead, you select one of four characters, choose from movements, positions or performance, and are shown a character that is dancing around the floor and you have to figure out what they want you to do with your arms and legs. It's pretty obvious that you can't do what the dancer is doing while on the balance board, and so far, after a half an hour, I can't figure out why sometimes I seem to be doing the right thing and others I am not. Any movements I make that score points have nothing whatsoever to do with ballet.

I looked through the booklet that comes with the disc, and it wasn't much more helpful. There was a grainy photo or two, but I couldn't make out from the photo what exactly the "positions" are supposed to be. There is also something listed in the book as "mimicry" that doesn't seem to be anywhere on the disc. If anyone else has played it and figured it out, I would be interested in finding out what to do. (I'm usually pretty good at figuring these things out!)

All in all, I have to say this was a big waste of time and money. Wii Fit and Wii Active were much more fun.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor programmed game, December 30, 2009

This review is from: My Ballet Studio (Video Game)
After buying/playing the wii fit plus, i can see this came COULD have had SO much potential! Being an ex-dancer I thought this would me more like a ballet workout where you use position/exercises/stretches and the balance board in combination with ballet. Boy was I wrong. Like the other reviewers, I can agree that there is no instruction as to correct position except for a dumb dancing doll in which you attempt to copy.

Wii fit plus utilizes the board and your movements on the board to amazingly detect where your body position is and whether it is correct/incorrect. That technology was not applied to this game. There is major lack of instruction, no "trainer" or "teacher" to teach learning dancers correct posture and positioning and clearly one cannot dance the don qixote pas de deux on a balance board. I don't know why they'd think to include preformances as an option to this game. One can not preform on the balance board.

For those attempting to use with wiimote and nunchuck, you will have better results, however don't expect to learn anything of core value for reall ballet skills. this will show you poor examples of routines and positions and will not help any dancer become more refined. If anything, it will create poor habits if used without any reall class instruction or prior knowledge of ballet positioning.

PLEASE NINTENDO and 505 Games, use your programming skills and make a dance game worthy of what the balance board is capable of.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not really dancing - pretty lame, December 28, 2009
= Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: My Ballet Studio (Video Game)
First off, I don't know how other WII dancing games are, but it's not really dancing - and in fairness, I guess how could it be, right? The game breaks down into 2 sections - positions and movements. Once you've passed enough lessons (at least 20 in each, not sure how many as more are unlocked as you move thru them) you can then choose to dance a performance number. My dd has done about 10 of the movements lessons and basically it wants you to mimic foot position and hand positions (think DDR) that are shown on screen for the balance board and the controller. So you basically shift your weight and swipe the controller left, righ, up, down based on what the graphic does. Lame, lame, lame. The doll on screen does all these really cool dances while my dd does her Travolta disco-error arm points - lol! She didn't even want to try the positions section and quit after 10 lessons. I don't know if she'll play it again after her first day experience. I'll have to go back to my rule of not buying games that haven't been reviewed. And tho this review is for the WII, I can't even imagine playing this game on the DS, which is also available. Snore.........

4.0 out of 5 stars A bit challenging to figure out, April 25, 2010
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: My Ballet Studio (Video Game)
Bought the Game yesterday, and during the first try...i must admit that the game was a bit confusing. I leafed through the booklet as well to find out if there were instructions and i couldn't quite figure out what it wanted you to do at the beginning. I was using the both the remote, and the balance board (if you don't have the balance board) you can use the nunchuk. I've been using the wii fit plus games, so i was very excited to use the board with the game. Looking for a good additional workout.

I tried the game again today. I tried just the Movement lesson Mode. What it pretty much wants you to do, after trial and error....Lesson 1 (would be arm movements), Lesson 2 (more difficult arm movements), Lesson 3 (lower body movements) and so on. When you highlight each one, it would give a description of the what the lesson focuses on. I got on the balance board...and tried lesson 1 first. Arm movements. I stood on the balance board and placed the remote on my right hand. There's this Big shooting Star that goes from a series of directions on the screen (in the middle of the big red circle. (Left to Right, Right To left, Up to Down, Down to Up etc). I finally discovered, that if you follow the shooting star....(Imagine like drawing on the screen using the remote (with full your arm).....that's what it wanted you to do. the little icon on the bottom left corner of the screen will switch from balance board to an arrow pointing to the right (depending on what Lesson you're in), signifying what controller to use in the next movement. if it switches to the balance board, the next movement will use your legs, if it's that arrow (pointing to the right) then get ready to use the remote and watch for the shooting star....swing the wii remote in the direction of the arrow at the same speed as the star on screen. I had a little trouble with the "shake" part, and figured out that wherever the "star" is placed on the screen, just point your remote in that direction, and shake the remote up and down. The lower Body movement lessons, will display the balance board on the screen, and you have to keep the big red dot on the yellow areas highlighted. adjustin your balance left to right, front to back, to keep the red dot in the yellow area. And keep your eye on the bottom left, to find out if the next movement will use the balance board or the remote.

I haven't gone through the Positions lessons thoroughly, but when i tried them yesterday...you pretty much have to mimic and hold the positions the ballerina is showing....and it is pretty hard...it think...it has a lot to do with the game sensing if your balance is shaking...i got a few of the moves correct....but still have to mess with the game. But the Movement lesson...after figuring out what it wanted me to do....i got 96% correct.

It sucks coz you can't pause the game or quit in the middle of the game, you always have to reset the software or wait until the game is over if you want to go back to the main menu.

The instruction booklet is a little helpful, but could have been structured better.

But i think, that this is a step up for those who've been using the wii fit plus games for a while want a good workout. The Positions lessons, (the ones i've tried) hurt (stiff bones and muscles) as you have to hold the positons for a few seconds, and WOW...some were really tough.

I'm determined to keep trying until i figure out the ins and outs of the game. Having an instructional booklet, that doesn't help much....well...i'm looking at the game as a challenge. And looking forward to mastering the moves. I'm no ballerina, but it seems a pretty good workout for those who want (and have the time) to figure the game out.

We read reviews, but either misinterpreted them or just didn't read enough. This was not ballet-like at all. The movement of the one controller and lack of required balance practice was frustrating. It appears like the game is a translated game from another country. It has an awkward menu and game play. We played it twice and sold it.

This game is awful. My sister was in ballet for years when she was a child and teen and she couldn't even make sense of thise mess. Read the book and tried many times to figure it out to no avail. Thought my little girl would love it, but if grown-ups who have done ballet can't figure it out, there is little hope for her to enjoy it. She plays Star Wars with the boys more than this game!

1.0 out of 5 stars Barely any ballet, January 30, 2010
By

This review is from: My Ballet Studio (Video Game)
We got a Wii for Christmas and my sister threw this in as an extra game because I am a ballet fan and recreational ballet student. She was hesitant to purchase it before Christmas because there were no reviews out, but decided to go for it.

Really wish there had been some earlier reviews.

After testing out the Wii Fit Board with Wii Fit Sports, I was excited to see what a ballet game would offer. Sadly, not much. I really couldn't figure out what they wanted you to do when the character was dancing on screen. There were no good on-screen instructions and the included instruction booklet was not much help either. I finally got the hang of swinging my arms around but the moves had absolutely nothing to do with traditional ballet arm positions or what the character was doing on screen. I was hoping with the Wii Fit Board it could detect if your arms were in first position or maybe if your feet were in first, second, position or simple balance positions like releve. Nope, not even close. This seems like it could potentially be great, but it falls waaaaaay short. I really hope they try redesigning it or putting more programming into it to take advantage of the Wii Fit Board. Otherwise they shouldn't even have bothered to advertise that it works with the board.

Don't waste your money.

1.0 out of 5 stars VERY Disappointed!!!, January 25, 2010

I thought (as the other reviewers have said) that this would give SOME kind of lesson in ballet. I was a ballerina when I was younger and have looked forward to getting my daughter into it as well. I have already thought some basic steps and was thrilled when I saw this game as we were getting the WII for Christmas. It gives no direction at all. I will be trading it in. :-(

1.0 out of 5 stars I don't think I'm going out on a limb here in saying it's the worst wii game to date, January 18, 2012
= Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: My Ballet Studio (Video Game)
If there is a wii game that gets you moving, I'm on it. Apparently I'm not alone as the active games are some of the best sellers on Amazon. Unfortunately, many seem to be copying games before them (how many personal trainers on the screen telling you to do the same things as the other games do I really need?) rather than morphing working out with playing a game (this is what made Walk It Out and Wii Fit 2 fun although I found too many balance exercises and not enough calorie burners on Wii fit, limiting its use.)

So I saw this in a discount store and made the mistake of not using my iphone to check out the reviews first.

Big mistake.

Huge.

I figured I couldn't lose...it was a rock bottem price and even if I found one activity on it, it seemed worth it to me if it was enjoyable.

However, like every other reviewer there actually was no part of the game that made sense.

I expected any moment that Ashton would jump out from behind my workout room door and yell "You've been punked" or perhaps Candid Camera was still on TV in other countries and a mini camera was inside?

This simply has no instructions and doesn't work at all. And when I say "at all" it means you can flail around and get points but try to do ballet and not get any. There is someone on the screen moving around but they don't tell you what to do. You can't mimic the screen movements at all on a balance board yet you are supposed to use it. If you try to mimic the movements nothing works anyway.

So basically the only thing you can do is see someone on the screen. You aren't dancing or doing ballet at all...you actually spend money just to, um, spend time figuring out what you are supposed to do and it not working?

I think this is a human experiment I just paid to be a part of and someone is doing a psychology thesis on the reviews.

It's the only explanation I can come up with on this one.

Epic Fail.
