5.0 out of 5 stars This album SUCKS! ... Buy it, June 26, 2005

This review is from: My Beach (Audio CD)
This has got to be one of the worst albums in the history of punk rock, ridiculous and sophmoric...I LOVE it! I have this record on vinyl (I'm old). I'm thrilled to see it's been preserved for posterior on CD. Combines the frivolity of early Beach Boys stuff with the agressiveness of late '80s California skate punk (a la the Dickies, Redd Cross) and a bit of B-52s and Devo type wackiness. As both a surfer and an old mohawk maniac, I can't recommend this disc highly enough.

If you accidentally bought Brittany Spears or Kylie Minogue or something instead, be sure to return it and tell 'em you really wanted the Surf Punks.

5.0 out of 5 stars DEFINITIVE MODERN SURFING CLASSIC, February 10, 2000
By
This review is from: My Beach (Audio CD)
This album represented the energy and freedom of the culture and the sport of surfing, and did more than that: it helped protect surf music from obscure death by injecting it with a healthy dose of punk. 'Somebody Ripped My Stick' alone is worth the price of the entire album. Also if you read the liner notes, you get to see where Pauly Shore got most of his standup lines. <GRIN sorry Paul>

I am always reminded of my high school days when listening to this album (kinda wierd for a girl from the land-locked state of New Mexico, huh?) Just goes to show that the Surf Punks' lyrics are universal.

What can you say about the Surf Punks? For anyone who's surfed long enough to remember when it was almost strictly outlaw, this album is a blast from a less-crowded-but-less-mellow past. A few dorky songs are worth it anyway, for their historic value...and the rest? Go home!

Bad vocals, dumb lyrics, stupid instrumentation - these guys are great! Finding this in CD form gave me a flash back to my early punk rock and surfing days. Don't expect hardcore punk or great surf music, just some fun on some cool songs - Somebody Ripped my Stick, My Wave.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic punk album by a classic punk band, June 12, 2003

As a collector of classic american rock n' roll I'd would have to say that this is an essential piece of work if you like really awesome punk rock. Originally this was released in 1979 as "Surf Punks" on their independent day-glo label. But in 1980 it was released with two new songs. This album is filled with Beach Boys/Ramones influenced rock n; roll and is a real collectors' item.

5.0 out of 5 stars We all live for the Sun...., December 27, 2007
This review is from: My Beach (Audio CD)
I guess like other reviewers here I have to say that this album brings back great memories of surfing and partying from my hazy days of youth. I was lucky enough to see the Surf Punks live in 1981 and it was a riot. Best value concert ever.
Hey maybe they aren't as accomplished as others, but the lyrics echoed what all of us locals felt about Vals and inland grommets.......and I still live for the sun.

5.0 out of 5 stars You Don't Have to be a Surfer . . ., January 20, 2004
This review is from: My Beach (Audio CD)
. . . to love this album. I love surf music from the Ventures era. I love punk rock. So this album combines them both. Juvenile, sophmoric, whatever. Brings back memories.

Brings back SO many memories of younger days. This one's a classic! Much better than their other two albums, IMHO.

If you grew up in San Diego California during the 1980's then you have got to remember the Surf Punks on the turn table, Larry Himmel on the television and, Roger Hedgecock on the radio. No, there was nothing finer than San Diego At Large, Skippy and Biff going to El Cajon and being careful to not drink the water because it was east of I-805, finding a hard place to park at La Jolla Cove to go SCUBA diving, and the girls on Mission Beech watching you try to surf when the waves would not form. Use Audacity and Magix to make some cool ring tones of these tunes!

The Surf Punks bring it all back. See them on You Tube and if you like, buy. Too bad I lost the old vinyl.
