Editorial Reviews

Review

In My Bear Griz, the first book written and illustrated by Suzanne McGinness, a young boy wearing a paper crown declares, “My name is Billy and I love bears” in immense text that mirrors the size of Griz, a grizzly, of course, and the bear he loves best. He goes on to describe the ins and outs of their friendship –- they like to eat peanut butter and honey sandwiches, snuggle up for naps and stargaze in tandem. The sequence feels like a warmhearted coda to Jez Alborough’s “Eddy and the Bear” series.

There is no story here to speak of, but it’s a sweet portrait of an imaginary friendship. The book’s strength is the illustration, which combines a scratchy, colorful Paul Galdone-like bear along with mixed media images: the boy with a collaged hat, intervals of childish penciled handwriting, watercolor washes and pen-and-ink drawings." - The New York Times

In other parts of the world, I imagine parents talking to their children about walking loudly to scare off snakes and not walking into lakes for fear of alligators. I give the "don't run or scream" lecture for bear safety up here in Alaska. My three year old knows to "stay close to mom" and mom will "spray the bear" (most hikers carry bear spray to "help" if attacked). I don't know how much he understands, but I hope it sticks if needed.

I realized I needed to tone it down a bit when he was given a stuffed bear for his birthday and he said it was "too dangerous". Thank goodness for Suzanne McGinness's book, My Bear Griz. As my children often enjoy reading a book multiple times (read as ten times without stopping or getting up from the couch), I am overjoyed when a book has illustrations and a story that I enjoy. The drawings have movement, express emotion and are child friendly. These are the types of drawings that would be perfect framed in a nursery or hung in a preschool.

The book shows a boy and a large Grizzly Bear walking through the woods, exchanging secrets and sharing a sandwich. They have an adventure and emerge from the woods as a young boy dragging his teddy bear by the arm. The imagination of the child is evident, without having to be expressed in words. Of course, we do have a little discussion about not feeding wild animals your sandwich or trying to ride upon bears in the forest. It allows us to talk about bear safety in a slightly less scary and graphic way.

This book holds appeal for a wide age range as my 1 1/2 year old asks to read it as often as my three year old. It will be a wonderful first reader as well due to the simple words that pair beautifully with the drawings. I am glad that it is a hard cover as they like it so much!

Billy and Griz go on a lot of fun adventures. When I was working at a bookstore, I always had a difficult time finding picture books to recommend for young listeners between 1 -3yrs old. My Bear Griz is perfect for this age group.

The text is short and the font is large - "We like to go exploring" or "Griz is a great listener. We like to share secret"

"We like to go exploring" is the only text on one page. -"Griz is a great listener. We like to share secrets", its the only time two sentences are on one page.

Not combining the short text makes this story that much for ideal for young listeners. The text and illustrations blend together very well. Griz takes of the whole page in almost every spread adding to the wow factor. Griz looks as adorable as his name. McGinness use of color is great, I especially enjoyed the crayola inspired trees. I love this very sweet story that encourages imagination. The surprise ending is great.

"My name is Billy and I love bears. My bear's name is Griz because he is a Grizzly Bear."

Billy and Griz do lots of things together, like playing hide-and-go-seek and looking at the stars and telling jokes.

This is a book with illustrations big enough for an enormous grizzly bear and his enormous adventures. Lovely ending, with the little boy dropping his stuffed grizzly bear as he heads toward home.
