This CD is a masterpiece! Only Willy Chirino can mix Beatles music with latin flavor without losing its original essence. "Because" is a mix with La Comparsa (Ernesto Lecuona) and his daughters voices are so perfect, that it is very hard to believe that it is not The Beatles singing the song. I can't describe it, its magnificent! Another favorites are Yellow Submarine and Black Bird. The latin flavor makes it impossible not to get up and start dancing! Willy, I am so proud of you, and honored that you were born in Cuba. Nobody beats you, and I must say that the Beatles wherever they are, are proud of your masterpiece and dancing away, the Cuban way!

I grew up listening to the Beatles. I can remember hearing “I Want to Hold Your Hand” for the first time on WHB Radio in Kansas City while riding in the back of our 1962 Rambler Ambassador station wagon. What a WALL of sound! We had never heard anything like that before - such a complete change from Elvis Presley, The Everly Brothers, and Ricky Nelson!

Because the Beatles were such a huge part of our lives back then many of their songs have very special memories for me. As such I’m usually not a big fan of people covering Beatle songs and applying their own style – until now. I can’t recall exactly what made me first listen to this CD, but I was floored. It is immediately obvious that Mr. Chirino loves the Beatles and their music every bit as much as the rest of us who grew up in that era.

Willy has assembled an incredible collection of phenomenally talented musicians who are true to the original songs (and sound), while at the same time adding a totally new style or “flavor” that works surprisingly well. Stick on the headphones and listen to the drums, the guitars, the solos, the harmonies, the orchestration – no minuscule detail has been overlooked, right down to the handclaps on “Here Comes The Sun”. The last time I can remember being this stunned by a musical performance is when I heard Gloria Estefan (another Cuban) singing the National Anthem at the 2003 World Series.

While the CD lists 12 tracks there are 14 titles (tracks 11 & 12 each cover 2 songs). But, if you’re at all familiar with the Beatles’ songs you can catch little snippets of other songs that have been worked in, such as the signature “Birthday” guitar riff at the end of “All You Need Is Love”, or the “Sgt. Peppers” orchestration in the middle of “Yellow Submarine”.

In music, as in the plastic arts, the artist is inclined to admire, borrow, take and make his own from what has come before; hence, art begets art. What is fundamental throughout great art is something referred to by some as "the thing," which has no name and makes the work "Great Art."

Picasso admired Velázquez, Goya, Zurbarán and El Greco, who in turn admired Venetian artists from the Italian renaissance like, Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese. When the Beatles began their musical careers, they looked over the pond towards America, specifically to Rock & Roll, Blues and Rhythm & Blues; to artists like Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry. Who or what had the most influence on these artists? Well, if you listen to Rock and Roll classics like Richard Berry's "Louie, Louie" or Johnny Otis's "Willie and the Hand Jive" you will find clues. In fact, the distinctive Cha-cha-chá rhythm of "Louie, Louie" and the 3-2 Son clave hand clapping beat in "Willie and the Hand Jive" are hard to miss.

Cuban music is not merely important, but a fundamental music of the western hemisphere. This profound influence, that has affected so many aspects of popular music in America, is usually unrecognized or taken for granted. With "My Beatles Heart" Willy Chirino has taken us full circle with his own magical mystery tour, perhaps unknowingly, through time, continents and follows the path Cuban music has taken. He begins from Old Havana, with echoes of Ernesto Lecuona's "La Comparsa" to the new port city of early Louisiana, pausing briefly to dance a little Danzón, so popular in this city before there was such a thing as jazz.

I own over 2400 Beatles cover versions by a variety of artists and in a variety of styles. This is a pretty good Latino cover version of various Beatles songs and I would recommend it for those collectors looking for something a little different in their collection.

A+++++ ... Just wish A) "Drive My Car" was longer ... At only 49 minutes, wish there were more tunes ... Would be wonderful if there was an accompanying DVD (as in Ojos de Brujo and/or Bamboleo's recent projects). If you love the Beatles and Afro-Latin music, this is an unequivocal MUST HAVE!
