Gripping historical spy romance, January 31, 2008
My Beautiful Spy is set in Romania and Turkey during World War 2. Nick Davis is an English spy posing as a diplomat. He meets and immediately falls for the very beautiful Daniela Simonici, a Romanian Jew with a mysterious past who is also mistress to a prominent German businessman. The book takes place over the next four years and is part love story, part thriller and part mystery.
It took me a while to come to terms with Colin Falconer's writing style. He goes out of his way to spell out things that don't need the over-explanation and he also resorts to some clunky techniques to let us know what characters are thinking (at one point, for instance, Daniela talks to a photograph of her dead mother to let us know how she feels about Nick). However he is also very good at building tension and keeping the momentum up. I found it very hard to put this book down and final twists weren't resolved until the last pages.
Falconer also does a great job of interweaving this fictional tale with real historical events. The Balkan region was targeted by both the Germans and the Russians during World War 2 and makes a fascinating backdrop for Nick's story.
Despite its flaws, this highly readable book keeps you engrossed throughout. If you enjoy historical novels, this is a great choice.

Swift, smart and exciting. I thought I was through with novels from this era of history, but Falconer's story line kept me involved and interested.
