Compares and contrasts various parts of the human anatomy with those of animals and concludes that all bodies are different and special.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2AA look at human and animal bodies with comments on differences and similarities. Each double-page spread begins with a command relating to a part of the body, such as "Look in a mirror!" (eyes) or "Pinch your skin!" It is accompanied by a delightful cartoon illustration of a child acting out the command. A brief explanation of the purpose of that anatomical part follows, e.g., "a tough head-to-toe covering to protect you from the heat, dirt, and dust." The opposite page has drawings of two or more animals with one or two facts relating to the body part for each one, such as "A male chameleon can change its skin color when he feels angry or falls in love." The lively watercolor illustrations are an essential part of the book. The artists have given the animals a certain charm; the human skeleton even has a smile. The "Helpful Words" section has only eight words in it, and two of them are repeated, word for word. A good addition to an easy-science section or picture-book collection.AElaine Lesh Morgan, Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR

More About the Author

Mick Manning has been writing and illustrating children's books for twenty years, often sharing the illustration with his partner, the illustrator Brita Granström. Their book awards include The Smarties Silver Award and The English Association Award (which they have won four times: 2000, 2005, 2008 and again recently in 2011 with Taff in the WAAF, the follow-up to their much loved Tail-End Charlie.) Mick and Brita are also the creators of 'Max and Kate', the long running pre-school picture story, for Ladybug Magazine in the USA.

Their most recent books are Nature Adventures and Charles Dickens. Scenes From An Extraordinary Life. Reviewed by Simon Callow in the New York Times in December 2011: ". . . anyone of any age who is interested in Dickens would gain something from this book: its verve and wit are infectious . . . The subtitle sums it up very well: a wonderful, enduring introduction for young readers."

We love this book (3 1/2 year old). The commands are fun - explore your teeth, stick out your tongue. It has a few ideas for further activities in the back. Today we made a "nose book" all about the sense of smell, and an "eye book" about sight. Excellent series with great pictures and simple explanations. Your nose is your smelling machine - great stuff. Giraffes have tongues long enough to reach into their ears!
