Product Description

Sheri Carmichael was content living on the South Side of Chicago with her mother and brother Todd. Her best friend Chantel lived next door and her thugged out boyfriend Rico meant the whole world to her. When Sheri's brother Todd is chosen as the number #2 draft pick in the NBA draft Sheri's life changes completly. The family was just getting used to the NBA family life when a violent home invastion forced Sheri and her mother out of the family home. Sheri's brother Todd arranges for the family to move to an upscale community in the Chicago suburbs. Forced to transfer during her senior year, Sheri finds herself having to adjust to a new school. New friends Jade and Megan befriend Sheri because her brother is an NBA player. Courtside seats to a basketball game, a brand new car, a credit card with no limit and a trip to the NBA All-Star game are among the perks that Todd lavishes onto his sister during her senior year of high school. Sheri also finds herself getting extra close with Todd's roommate NBA player Richard Easton. Immaturity, jealousy and money cause Sheri's senior year of high school to spin out of control. Being instant rich can have it's problems. Sheri's long lost father even comes knocking around after Todd strikes it rich in the NBA. Things get extra tense Sheri's on again off again boyfriend Rico loses control. With all of the distractions will Sheri even finish high school. My Brother Is A Baller is a one of a kind book that details the life of a sibling of a professional basketball player. The instant money and fame may seem appealing but with noteriety comes challenges and unwanted attention.

3.0 out of 5 stars Moving Up, February 9, 2009
By Jennifer Coissiere (Georgia) - See all my reviews

My Brother Is A Baller by Dorrie Williams-Wheeler, made me think of the old saying you can take the girl out of the hood, but you cannot take the hood out of the girl. Another one is, when you start doing the necessary things to have a better life your friends will start thinking you think you are better than them, and they will do whatever it takes to keep you just like them.

Sheri Carmichael is overshadowed by her brother, Todd, who is drafted into the NBA. Things were going fine, until the night Sheri and her mother, Felicia, were robbed. Todd and Felicia decide that it would be best to leave the old neighborhood. None of the changes of her lifestyle is her choice, but Sheri is caught up in trying to keep her old friends in her new surroundings, while trying to make new friendships. It is not as easy as she thought. Did her friends want to be her friend because they liked Sheri as a person, or due to Todd being in the NBA? Who is playing Sheri for a fool?

The characters are well developed. There is a lot of drama which kept me turning the pages quickly. However, the editing is poor and distracting at times. One thing that made me have to flip back through the pages was a character's name that changed midway through the book. Overall My Brother Is A Baller is a good read, and I recommend it to readers that like drama.

5.0 out of 5 stars Drama Is Her Middle Name, February 11, 2009
By Shelia M Goss (Entertainment Writer & Author of Young Adult Books & Women's Fiction) - See all my reviews
My Brother Is A Baller follows the life of Sheri Carmichael. You would think with her brother Todd being drafted into the NBA straight out of high school, life for Sheri would be great-wrong.

Sheri is a drama magnet. She struggles with being in Todd's shadow and dealing with people trying to be her friend only because of her superstar NBA brother. Once Sheri gets out of one situation, she finds herself in more drama.

My Brother Is A Baller is a fast paced and entertaining read. It will have you wanting to shake some sense into Sheri. Sheri makes some of the same unwise decisions that a lot of young folks make. She thinks she knows it all but in the end, Sheri does learn quite a few valuable lessons.

Friendships and relationships will be tested in between the pages of Dorrie Williams Wheeler's My Brother Is A Baller. Its the type of book where both adults and teens can enjoy.
