5.0 out of 5 stars REAL Characters, REAL Scotland... November 17, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I devoured this book in just four short days. I must say, I'm very impressed with this submission as the first novel from SJ Byrne. I have read the works of several novice writers this year, and this by far stands out from the rest. Most Scottish romance stories are carbon copies with fluff in between heated scenes, but this however; is a much more complex story tackling very intricate emotions. It is more a story of personal growth and self-love than a traditional romance.

Ms. Byrne incorporated wonderful homages throughout the story, references that many active members of the Scottish-American culture in the United States would instantly recognize, creating a familiarity between the author, the characters, and the reader.

Ms. Byrne should also be commended on the depth of her research, and accuracy of her presentation. As a frequent traveler to Scotland myself, I found it easy to predict the characters destination based off the description of the journey. This adds a layer of authenticity to her novel, both through physical description and the more subtle detail of a culture that is uniquely Scottish. Thus the reader is grounded in a place and time; without the need for fantasy or make believe.

This tale is not one for the faint of heart; it delves into the depths of the darkest aspects of the human psyche, without fear of restraint or taboo. But only with the exploration of the dark can one truly experience and appreciate the light. The fear, awkwardness, and hesitation of the main character takes a full grip upon the reader, as does her strength and growth.

In all, job WELL done, and I can't wait to read what Ms. Byrne will have in store for us in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Read!!!!! September 13, 2011
By Mel
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was an amazing book...the story flowed from one scene to the next. I was caught up from the very beginning, just couldn't stop reading! This author has a way of making you see just what she is writing about. I was a little stunned with the opening scenes but they were definitely vital to the story. The characters are very well developed and I love the way the author has the Scottish characters literally "speak".. This story makes me want to step up my timeline for going to Scotland and see the places she writes about! Can't wait for more books from SJ Byrne!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Characters September 13, 2011
By LJ
Format:Kindle Edition
The characters in SJ Byrne's book are developed in such a vivid and realistic way that it's hard not to feel a connection with them. I found myself completely wrapped up in the main character's journey. The Scottish setting was very well done and the written brogue was great. Fiction is not usually my genre of choice, but this was a wonderful book and I look forward to reading SJ Byrne's next adventure.
