For those who are just beginning to read,
This review is from: My Camp-Out (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition) (Real Kid Readers: Level 1) (School & Library Binding)
My Camp-Out (Real Kids Readers)My Camp-out is designed for those children who are just beginning to read on their own. This is one of a series called Real Kids Readers and focuses on an African-American girl on her first camping trip. She begins her expedition with confidence and all the equipment necessary for an overnight excursion. Darkness brings some unexpected reactions from her fertile imagination. There is a happy ending to our story as her mother is there with her to share her camp-out. There are one or two short sentences per page, and author Marcia Leonard utilizes many sight words that should be familiar to her audience. The full-color photographs by Dorothy Handelman assist the reader by exemplifying the words on the page. This book may appeal to children, especially African-American girls, who enjoy seeing themselves and their family and friends represented in literature. The simple sentences and photographic hints will increase the chances of a successful reading experience and can be effective in spite of the posed nature of the photographs.
