5.0 out of 5 stars Cult Classic!
Sleek cars, stuffy old men, and a Madonna-esque, high spirited girl are the ingredients of this 1980's comedy that has since reached cult status deservingly. Cult actress Deborah Foreman, star of such films as Valley Girl, April Fool's Day, Waxwork, and Lobster Man From Mars gives her best performance yet, defying all other mainstream 80's starlets such as Molly...

3.0 out of 5 stars The Little Film That Could
This alternately sweet and profane film shows fewer signs of aging than many of the other time-locked releases of the era, thanks to writer/director David Beaird's theatrical background. Sadly, the controversy surrounding the producer's reporting of box office grosses had a direct impact on how well the film ultimately performed. A number of reviewers mention the film's...

5.0 out of 5 stars Cult Classic!, March 19, 2000
This review is from: My Chauffeur (DVD)
Sleek cars, stuffy old men, and a Madonna-esque, high spirited girl are the ingredients of this 1980's comedy that has since reached cult status deservingly. Cult actress Deborah Foreman, star of such films as Valley Girl, April Fool's Day, Waxwork, and Lobster Man From Mars gives her best performance yet, defying all other mainstream 80's starlets such as Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy. The plot centers around Foreman's character Casey Meadows, who has just been hired for a position as a chauffeur at the elite Brentwood Limiousines Ltd. Casey is not welcomed by her new colleagues, mainly because she happens to be the only female working there. Can Casey prove them wrong and save her job? The film takes us on a journey through all of Casey's driving escapades, which include a feisty punk star, an Arabian prince, and ultimately, the son of the owner of Brentwood, where the climax of the film begins. When I watched this movie for the first time, it reminded me of other 80's flicks like Mannequin and Maid to Order. This film surpasses those though, mixing elements of 1930's screwball comedy and Valley Girl style. After this film being virtually unavailable for years, Rhino productions has kindly re-released it on VHS and DVD. If you dont posess a liking for 80's films in general, you most likely will not enjoy this film, but if you have an open mind and a love for campy 80's pop culture, then you will no doubt love this film.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic, Funny 80's Romantic Comedy, March 25, 2002
By
This review is from: My Chauffeur [VHS] (VHS Tape)
My Chauffeur is a classic 80's romantic comedy. Deborah Foreman as Casey Meadows is quirky, cute and lovable. Sam Jones as "Battle" is the ultimate rich brute, until Casey's cuteness and lovability break him down. This is a cute movie that people still talk about today. Worth checking out.

First off, kudos to Rhino for salvaging this cult film from the 1980s. While you're at it ... howzabout doing the same for Valley Girl, Real Genius or April Fools Day! :)

All in all, I'm pretty pleased with this release

The animated bios are for Debby, Sam Jones, E.G Marshal, Howard Hessman and Penn & Teller. They consist of headshots from the movie accompanied by things like Date-of-Birth and filmographies.

The slide show is much like the animated bios, but consist only of about 10 photos or so.

While I am glad to have a "clean" copy to watch now, I do have two small complaints.

1). Sadly, the DVD is full-frame as opposed to letterbox.

2). The transfer, while somewhat clean, does possess some signs of age. I'm sure Rhino did the best they could with whatever print they had. It just might've been my TV, but it did seem to be somewhat darker than my VHS version

I highly recommend this to any Deb-heads out there or fans of 80s cult films.

5.0 out of 5 stars My, my it's hot, but at least it's not STICKY!, August 17, 2003

I discovered this movie in the 80's while working at a TeleVid, a VHS and Beta rental store (REMEMBER Beta!!). This movie is hysterical and SO quotable. Deborah Foreman reminds me of an adorable grownup Shirley Temple. Like another reviewer, I thought The Wigs were excellent and have sought out their music a few times over the years. This movie should be viewed as a time capsule from the 80's, rather than an example of exemplary filmmaking. ENJOY it's humor and cheesiness. Who'd ever think we'd be waxing nostalgic about those years. Sigh...

5.0 out of 5 stars My Chauffeur Rocks, December 4, 2004

After seeing this movie for the first time in years, My Chauffeur still tickles in all the right places. One of the best features of this flick, is the awesome soundtrack. After years of searching for the source of this music, I finally stumbled on the following. The Wigs, the Band that appears in the chapter titled "Cat Fight", as well as on the soundtrack, are a real band, not just an urban legend, Yes, Virginia, There Really is The Wigs ! and they used to play frequently at "Madam Wongs West" in L.A. Rumor has it that The Wigs are considering re-releasing all their recorded material.

This movie was one of the nice surprises I had when I first started renting movies in the late 80's. I just recently watched my bootleg copy I made from a neighborhood video store copy(pre-Blockbuster...they were ALL little neighborhood stores) and had an immediate lovely flashback to those days. I also noted that the music seems to be Michael Nyman, or Nyman-ish, which, in his similarity to Philip Glass, made the movie all that much more charming. I can't speak for the DVD but the VHS version, although weak in places, is still charming in the low-key, New Wave way that now seems so naive. Wasn't it great to NOT have celphones and PCs and the internet? Not to mention that New Wave was still NEW. *sigh* Goes well with the much-more-cool "Something Wild". Or even a nice match with "Repo Man".

5.0 out of 5 stars my favorite movie, April 28, 2005
This review is from: My Chauffeur (DVD)
I love the desert scene when she's doing the southern bell routine. There are so many great scenes, where do you start.
I already have it on vhs but I would also like to have it on dvd.
My husband thinks I do a pretty good impression of her in the desert scene. A must see. Some material may not be appropriate for younger viewers.
