Editorial Reviews

Review

"A grandmaster, excellent writer and careful researcher who doesn't seek out controversy, but is equally unafraid to plumb the sometimes murky depths of chess politics, Ree is an ideal chess journalist.” - Jon Speelman, The Observer

About the Author

Grandmaster Hans Ree (1944) is a four-time Dutch champion, and represented his country from 1966 through 1994 in every chess Olympiad. From 2001-2007, he was the wearer of the "Euwe Ring,” an award for outstanding service to Dutch chess. He writes about chess in NRC Handelsblad, New in Chess magazine, and on the American website russell-enterprises.com. Internationally he is considered to be one of the best chess writers of his era.

Hans Ree is one of my favorite writers on the world of chess, and I enjoyed this one most of all of his books -- I regretted reaching the end. This book is generally about his personal experiences in chess, and provides sketches and anecdotes of many other interesting characters. It feels as if you are part of the intellectual European chess scene, but may leave you wishing your country had the chess culture and awareness of the Dutch.

Format: Kindle Edition
I like Hans Ree but I have not carefully read this book.

My issue is with the publisher notes. It notes that Hans Ree uses the ICC account "A6648". Although I have no doubt Ree might have used the account from time to time, I have a hard time believe that account is him.

For one thing, A6648 is an okay but not very good player. The account does have a lot of games played on the account but it is hard to believe that Ree played all that many games with it. For one thing, the peak rating on that thing is 2211 for bullet, 2186 for blitz and 2093 for standard.

Ree is a grandmaster who beat some really strong players in tournament settings. At the very least I expect Ree to have peak ratings in ICC of @least 2400 and regular ratings of over 2000. Not the current class C and B in blitz and standard. Even I beat that account.

Ree could easily have a free account. A6648 is a paid account.

As I look at the account, it seems to be very unlikely that Ree uses it very much.
