I bought this for a Thanksgiving weekend trip but decided to read the introduction. I got so into the book, I finished it in one sitting. This isn't really an autobiography. Photo journal is probably a better description. It's packed with great pictures of Kesha and those around her. While there are some funny moments in the book, she often came off sounding more serious and introspective than I expected. Kesha had a very unconventional upbringing with a very loving, hippie mother and two brothers. She was raised around musicians and songwriters. The family often lacked money, so she learned how to make a lot out of very little.

Kesha Sebert may seem strange and unusual to many people. Her book provides some insight into why she is the kind of person she is. The more I've come to know about her the less weird and more interesting she seems. Her ambition and drive to succeed are admirable. I was also impressed by her courage and determination. She dropped out of high school a month before graduation to move from Nashville to LA to pursue her dreams of becoming a singer. She did this despite being accepted to multiple ivy league colleges because a producer named Dr. Luke wanted to sign her. Many people might question her judgment but obviously, the risk paid off for her.

Dr. Luke ended up being too busy to really focus on her, so she lived for years in LA largely broke trying to find people who were willing to work with her. Her luck changed when she did some vocals on Flo Rida's massive hit Right Round. Offers poured in from multiple record companies and she started working on her first album. The songs were largely written during those broke but carefree years, so there was a lot of focus on fun and partying in addition to her songs about love and loss.

My Crazy Beautiful Life by Ke$ha is a book that I found on of my trips to BAM (Books-A-Million). I enjoy listening to Ke$ha's feel-good catchy pop songs so I figured I would read it. I got it at my library and read the entire book during a half hour car ride. My Crazy Beautiful Life really had a ton of humor and it was a very entertaining read.

We learn of Ke$ha's roots with being born at a party, getting accepted into Ivy Leagues like Columbia, dropping out of High School, and sneaking to Prince's house in just few pages. I was surprised but My Crazy Beautiful life was filled with tons of awesome quotes such as: "This is my dream. This is the only thing that I have been put on Earth to do and this is just the beginning."

This isn't exactly sophisticated Shakespearean text but it's definitely alot more fun to read. I particularly loved this little anecdote about glitter (for those of you who don't know Ke$ha is a glitter fanatic). When talking about glitter Ke$ha remarked: "It's like marking your territory. And if I get lost you can just follow the trail of glitter to me.....My assistant told me: 'Sometimes I think I have dandruff, but then I realize it's glitter'."

Besides all of Ke$ha's fun stories about concerts and making music, My Crazy Beautiful Life explores serious topics too. Ke$ha addresses bullying and how she was bullied for being different and an individual. "I know how it feels to be bullied; I know it can stay with you for a long time. But I always had a dream and a determined mind." Ke$ha overcame all of her haters and bullies and she didn't let them change who she is. If Ke$ha let those haters dictate and change who she is, Ke$ha wouldn't be the record-selling hit she is.

Kesha's book is really an extended tour book, jammed with previously unpublished family photos and photos from the road. The theme of the book is simply stated "be yourself, unapologetically, always". Kesha details her upbringing, emphasizing her drive and dedication to succeed in the music business. Here is what makes Kesha different from you and me: she dropped out of high school after being accepted to Ivy League colleges to chase her dream of being a successful songwriter and performer. Ask yourself, would you have the guts to do this?
Musical from birth, Kesha developed her "dance pop/rock n' roll" image over a few years and set out to produce dance pop presented in a rock and roll, party-hardy style that you could both dance and bang your head to. She knows exactly who she is and what her place in the music world is and apologizes for absolutely nothing.
She clearly states throughout the book that it is extremely important to her that her career continue, that she expand upon the successes of her first album "Animal", and that she continue to tell her fans it's ok for them to be different and themselves.
Rock can always use someone who is unique and loves a big beat, and the message that individuality is ok can never be stated enough. The text in the book can be read in an hour or two but is sufficient to give you a clear image of who Kesha is in 2012: a creative songwriter and musician who is having a blast and wants us all to loosen up and have a little more fun too.
