5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Unselfconscious Romanticism, December 29, 2001
By
Penumbra (Atlanta, GA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: My Cup Runneth Over (Audio CD)
Ed Ames should be remembered as one of the outstanding American popular singers of the 20th century. During his career with the Ames Brothers, and later as a solo performer, Ed Ames sang rings around his contemporaries. He never has to resort to vocal trickery by talking a lyric or adding superfluous notes. Ed Ames' deep, rich baritone is pure music.

"My Cup Runneth Over" is a re-release of a 1967 album. The title song comes from the Broadway show, "I Do I Do," and sets the tone for a delightful mix of beautiful songs mostly from stage and screen. For example, "True Love" is the Cole Porter ballad from the Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra movie, "High Society" -- and no one ever sang the song better than Ed Ames.

This album is beautiful, unabashed romanticism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgia, July 9, 2002

This review is from: My Cup Runneth Over (Audio CD)
Today I heard a song on the radio by Ed Ames and was taken back in time to 1967. I was a teenager and was crazy about Ed Ames. So much so that my friends took me to his concert in San Diego for my birthday. "My Cup Runneth Over" has some of the most beautiful love songs ever written sung by a man with the richest, baritone voice and I nearly wore the album out. I have yet to part with it but no longer have a turn table so am ordering the CD. This is a classic body of songs and you can't go wrong with it. If you love beautiful melodies and inteligent lyrics, this CD is a must! Today is Mr. Ames 75th birthday. Happy Birthday, Mr. Ames, and thanks for the memories!

5.0 out of 5 stars Vocal Velvet, May 6, 2000
This review is from: My Cup Runneth Over (Audio CD)
In the Fifty-year history of modern popular music, there are only a handful of voices that are instantly recognizable. One of these is the satin smooth baritone of Ed Ames.

The title track, My Cup Runneth Over, is the highlight of the album, but it is given a gentle nudge by Au Revoir, True Love and Watch What Happens. As a bonus, Ed's beautiful rendition of Edelweiss can move a listener to tears.

It is often said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. When Ed Ames is singing, close your eyes and let your ears take over. The effect is magical.

I have the original 1967 record album. Practically wore it out! Drove my college roomate crazy by playing it over and over in the late 70s.

What can I say -- these songs still make me laugh and cry. To hear them with such clarity from a cd -- well, I may wear the cd out too.

If you are in any way romantic, do not miss obtaining this cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE HEART AND SOUL OF THE UNIQUE ED AMES, July 12, 2000
This review is from: My Cup Runneth Over (Audio CD)
Ed Ames is an unrivalled singer among the greatest male singers. And for many reasons: his absolute professionalism, his deep humanity that transcends his singing, his emotional, tasty, gracious, evocative style, the conviction he puts in each song, viewed as a work in itself. His voice is like the seasons, being like a light breeze or capable of thundering. He has the classicism and elegance of Bing Crosby, but he can really belt! It must be said that he made over 30 disks, and therefore the songs of the CD, though representative, are far from exhausting all what he sang, changing each song, even the more modern one, into a definite standard. Ed Ames was a tremendous, impressive artist who must be rediscovered and considered as one of this century's greatest singers. He must not be seen just as one of those retro singers. He is a great and rare entertainer, capable of bringing joy or stirring the soul. BUY THIS CD and let's hope that his numerous other disks will be released as CDs too! He deserves the best!
