Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Ah, “dad jokes,” those so-bad-they’re-funny mainstays of fatherly humor. Here is a look from a little boy who begins each page turn with the statement, “My dad thinks he’s funny.” Is Dad funny? Not if you’ve heard these groaners a hundred times before, which you have. Example: “Whenever I say, ‘I’m hungry,’ Dad says, ‘Hello, Hungry. Pleased to meet you.’” But the sheer repetition of these eye-rollers produces a cumulative effect of amusement—and, more to the point, tenderness. Though the boy’s expression is usually neutral, clearly the two are fond of each other, and Dad just wouldn’t be Dad without his wisecracks. There is quite a bit of repetition in the text, but that is mostly ameliorated by Jellett’s mixed-media illustrations, which paste our two characters into a series of unique backdrops, from cardboard to graph paper to construction paper, all of it colored and accessorized page by page to keep things off-kilter. A snicker-inducing read-aloud, especially with Mom. Grades K-2. --Daniel Kraus

From the Author

People often ask if the book is actually about my dad. I'm lucky because I grew up with two dads, my father and my step father. My dad likes to tell long stories and my step dad likes to recite silly poems. Mainly, the jokes in My Dad Thinks He's Funny came from lots of other people.
Once I had the idea for the book I started listening out for jokes and every time I heard one I would write it down. My father-in-law probably contributed the most but there are also jokes from my sister-in-law, my brother and my husband.
Once I had a collection of 'dadisms' I decided to write the book from the point of view of a child. I wanted to create a story that was warm and humorous, rather than just a collection of jokes. I was looking for the kind of jokes that make us roll our eyes but also make us laugh. I think my father-in-law is quite proud to see some of his best material in print!
My favourite page is the one where the little boy asks, "Dad, do you know what?" and Dad answers, "I don't know What, but I know his brother." That makes me laugh every time.

Our little boy laughed and laughed through this whole book making comments like, "Mom, Dad does this," or "Mom, Daddy says this all the time."
NewAgeMama
The illustrations were very quirky, in a good way, especially the facial expressions of both father and young son.

Funny dads anyone? My Dad Thinks He's Funny, is told from the perspective of a little boy. Each page begins with the statement, “My dad thinks he’s funny.” Admittedly, most of these corny saying are ones we adults have heard over and over again, but if you think back to childhood, some of them were pretty darn funny and made for special memories with our dad. Examples of the funny dad's humor are:

When young son tells dad "my finger hurts". Dad says, "Let's chop it off". When son says "my foot hurts", dad says, "No problem. You've got another."
When mom says to the young boy, "come and give me a kiss gorgeous," dad says, "I'll be right there".
A fun book full of sarcasm and eye-rolling sayings at the turn of each page.
This children's book is for kids ages 5 through 8 years, but I even think kids a bit younger might enjoy this one.
I think kids will LOVE this one, but some parents may want to "misplace it" after hearing the silliness once too often.

The illustrations were very quirky, in a good way, especially the facial expressions of both father and young son. Many of the facial sketches are done on graph paper with what looks like crayons, chalk and charcoal. The drawings are simple, but actually seem perfect for this type of book.

A fun read - This book would make a great dad's day gift for the " new dad", especially if "he thinks he is funny."

The 6, 4 and 2 year old grands thought it was funny -- especially when 2 or 3 were things their dad (my son) does. Which he then of course blamed on his father and grandfather.

We got this as a present for my dad (because he makes dad jokes very frequently) and he absolutely loved it! I would recommend this as a gift for any dad that frequently makes dad jokes!

This is a silly little book that is fun for Dad to read to our four year old daughter. He is guilty of some of the same jokes.

I bought this gift for my dad for his birthday. Growing up my dad made all of these jokes and more, he absolutely loves "Dad jokes." I had my son give it to his grandfather so they could read it together and have a good laugh. It was heartwarming to watch them laugh at such silly jokes.

Some groaners, but this book has been a frequent request to be read at bedtime by my 4 and now 5 year old boy.
